1st Trimester

First Prenatal Appointment

I found out that I'm expecting 10/4, so I'm a little over 5 weeks at this point. I called to make an OB/GYN appointment, and they won't get me in until 10 weeks. Is this a standard wait time for first appointments? Also, I'm not even seeing the doctor on that first appointment, it will be her NP. Is THIS normal? I thought about calling my regular OB/GYN that I see for my annual exam/pap smear to see if I can get in sooner. However, I wanted to switch providers since she really is the furthest thing from personable. I don't need a doctor to baby me and hold my hand, but it would be nice to have her answer my questions and not rush through the appointments.

I am a first timer, so lots of thoughts are appreciated! :)

Re: First Prenatal Appointment

  • Congratulations on your pregnancy!
I'm a first timer too. My doctors office does the first visit at 8 weeks with an NP and then an actual doctor visit at 12 weeks. As I nervous first timer, I don't love it but that seems to be pretty standard process. Plus I love my doctor and fully trust his office.

You definitely should be given plenty of time to ask questions and not be rushed. You should feel comfortable with your doctors office.

    Good luck!
  • If you don't know if you're high risk before you get pregnant they will usually schedule you 8-10wks. If you know you're high risk they will usually schedule first appt @ 6 wks. Well this is how we scheduled when I worked in obgyn. Every doctor is different. Congrats on the pregnancy many prayers your way.

  • That seems pretty normal from everything I've heard.  I had my first prenatal appt at 6 and a half weeks, but that's because I had severe pain on my right side and they wanted to make sure the pregnancy wasn't ectopic.

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

this. congrats, and try and relax the next few weeks.

  • I had a phone appointment at 6 weeks with a NP to review my medical history and for me to ask questions, first appointment is at 10 weeks with NP and first appointment with Ob at 14 weeks. It's perfectly normal, there's nothing for them to do this early if you're healthy to start with and have no previous losses.

  • Ditto PPs, this is completely normal. Most doctor's offices will have an on-call dr or nurse in case you have any questions prior to your first appointment though, so don't be shy about calling them.
  • I had a phone call with the NP at 5 weeks and change but I was 11w3d at my first actual appointment. Completely normal, if frustrating.

  • I had my first appointment at 9 weeks with a NP. Just a lot of paperwork and had blood work done. I saw my ob at 11 weeks and did an exam. At my office we see everyone In the practice so I get to know everyone bc, it depends on who is working when I go into labor. I was nervous at first but now I'm ok with it.
  • I have a dating sono at 8 weeks then one at 12 weeks
  • Yep. Totally normal. I'm 8w5d today and just had my first nurse appointment.
  • Totally normal. Like most PPs said.
