Help me help DD poop easier

DD has always had hard poop.  She would go every everyday, but it would be on the hard side.  I asked the pedi and they said to reduce her milk to one cup a day.  Nothing changed too much, she still pooped pebbles.

Last week was rough for her.  She had several days where she was crying and straining with barely any results.  The past couple of days have been productive for her, but she's still upset when she goes.

I bought prunes and she ate two on Friday morning, but when I offered the "big raisin" yesterday, she said no.  She doesn't like juice, so that's out.  Give me some ideas how to help her.  She eats a very balanced diet, so I'm kind of at a loss.  What about Activia?  Or another probiotic?  Or are those only for diarrhea?

I posted about this the other day. We have chronic problems so here's what we try:

Blueberries, kiwis, grapes, oranges, sweet potato, broccoli and cauliflower. I sprinkle bran buds on his Cheerios in the morning. We offer plain yogurt. Any probiotic yogurt should be plain or it's not effective. We limit dairy, especially cheese.

DS also takes miralax everyday. We are looking into oral probiotics to see if that helps.

  • Good suggestions from PPs. Can you increase her water intake?

  • Probiotics in yogurt, or orange juice, or anything not too hot, really. Offer some magnesium (Calm makes a powder that you can dissolve in HOT water, then cool off and she likely won't even taste it.) Beans, flax meal added to anything you can, and so on. Lots of water and activity. Good luck!!

  • I second the miralax if you haven't tried it. Also a high fiber diet, which sounds like you have been encouraging.
  • Fiber, yogurt and lots of non dairy fluids.  We also give DS1 Buddy Bear probiotic vitamins.

  • A balanced diet is great. However you may need to unbalance hers a little towards the more fiberous end.

I second Miralax daily and lots of water/activity.

Will she eat salad? Lettuce is great for that too. Whole oat oatmeal, fiber one bars are good too

  • One of my mommy friends has resorted to enemas :(

  • DD has always had a hard time pooping.  She doesnt poop every day and a lot of the time, when she does poop, it is just small little bits that come out at a time.  There have been times we even had to give her a suppository to get her to go, when she would get so constipated that it became painful for her. The pedi prescribed polyethylene glycol.  I have been giving DD 1 to 2 tsp a day of it for the past 2 years or more.  It really helps her.  I definitely notice that when I go a few days without giving it to her, she goes back to being constipated and it doesnt matter what her diet is.    I was concerned that if she took it for too long, that her body would begin to depend on it.  The pedi said that there is no harm in giving her this.  She did say that DD would most likely, grow out of the constipation issues, but so far she has not.  We were hoping that once she was potty trained that would help, and it has not.  So we continue to give her the polyethylene glycol.  Good luck with your LO.

  • Mexican food... seriously go get that kid some taco bell.

  • Thanks.  I was thinking about some Pedialax, so maybe I'll give that a shot.  She loves to take medicine, so hopefully I can just give it to her straight.
