Insulin -- at what point?

Seeing the doctor this week and I'm just trying to prepare myself haha.
I don't remember at what point I went on insulin last time but my after meal numbers have been a little elevated lately while my fasting is still very good.

For some reason in thinking they wait until fasting is elevated before putting you on insulin....?

Re: Insulin -- at what point?

  • My fasting number was the only number that was slightly elevated and they put me on Glyburide nightly. My two hours are fine.

  • They typically are looking for a pattern of high numbers. If your after meal numbers are consistently elevated, that would be enough for my endo to start insulin.

  • That's the problem I had. My fasting numbers were good. But when I tested 1 hour after each meal they would be high. If they were consistently elevated longer than 2-3 days I always called my doctor and/or diabetes educator.
  • Hi, I saw the endo last week and she said more than 1 high reading a day (regardless if its fasting or after meals) is then its time to start insulin.
