Parenting after a Loss

Valium & Breastfeeding

I've been sick on and off for the past 2 weeks with spinning and vomiting. Monday I was in the ER and I was there again today. I had to have 3 bags of fluid this morning I was so dehydrated from dry heaving. I was given Valium as last resort to end the headache since everything that was safe to take while BF failed. Unfortunately it is not safe to use while BF. I was told to pump and dump. My supply has already suffered this week and I'm afraid this will destroy it. I was hoping that there are some good options out there for me. I'm debating on taking the RX so I can get it out of my system. I am trying to figure out how long since the doctors and pharmacists had no clue.

They think my vertigo and vomiting is migraine related since my ears are clear. I will have to see a neurologist next week. I am so crushed. He did seem fine today with his pumped bottles and some formula when I was gone.

Re: Valium & Breastfeeding

  • I am sorry you have been feeling so rough! Is the valium helping? If you stop taking the valium, it would be out of your system in 8-12 hours, so if it's not doing anything, I would ditch it.

I hope you get some answers soon!

It helped at the hospital but I haven't taken it since. I may have to wait until Mon to get info from a LC.

  • You can try the infant risk center or look it up on lactmed.

    Lactmed says:
    https://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/f?./temp/~ISjcck:1

    Diazepam is excreted into
breastmilk and it and its active metabolite, nordiazepam, accumulate in
the serum of breastfed infants with repeated doses. Because the
    half-life of diazepam and
nordiazepam are long, timing breastfeeding with respect to the dose is
of little or no benefit in reducing infant exposure. Other agents are
preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.

After a single dose of diazepam,
as for sedation before a procedure, there is usually no need to wait to
resume breastfeeding, although with a newborn or preterm infant, a
cautious approach would be to wait a period of 6 to 8 hours before
    resuming nursing.

Thank you. That's what the pharmacist said. Nothing's more fun than pumping and dumping at 4 am. I am so happy I can nurse him now.
