1st Trimester

What are normal cramps?

Okay ... FTM here, and I've got two buns in the oven.  I'm only at 7 weeks, so still early in the game for me.

I feel like I'm cramping a bit in my lower abdomen and on my left side from low abdomen and up.  Dull pain that stays for a while, no shooting pains. No spotting or bleeding.  I'm currently taking Crinone, 2 Zofran a day, and 2 B6/Unisom at night along with my PVit.  My next u/s is Tuesday.  I'm eating better than I really ever have before and I'm keeping the fluids coming.

I don't want to be the whiny patient and call my doc every time I feel anything, so what kind of cramps have you had when all was well?  Should I call the doc and just let them know? Is this just gas? or possibly something worse?

Thanks,

Re: What are normal cramps?

  • Cramping is fairly normal. Doctors say it's not, but a lot of women experience cramping. If it's not blinding pain or accompanied by bleeding, don't sweat it. The pain on the left side is probably something called round ligament pain. Your body is adjusting & changing & growing 2 tiny humans - cramping & discomfort is to be expected. AND, as always, if you are really concerned, call your doctor. :)

  • I'm 4 1/2 weeks and I have had a few cramps here and there too. I've been told it's fairly normal as long as you're not bleeding. But I know it's hard not to worry. If you need to call the doctor go ahead and call, that's why they are there. Lord knows I drove mine crazy with my first pregnancy. Good luck.

  • I've been having slight cramping the whole time (8 wks). Kinds of like poo cramps-- not so bad but always there in the background. I think it's just the uterus stretching. I had the same when I was preg with my twins so I'm not too worried. But if it eases your mind to call your doctor then definitely do it.

  • I also am a first time mom.  I am only 4 weeks and 2 days.  I saw my Dr. yesterday about cramping.  She told me that cramping is normal and can last thru the first trimester.  My cramps feel like menstrual cramps as well as a backache.  My Dr. said as long as you are not bleeding anymore than spotting, the cramping is normal.  Hope this helps!  And Congratulations!
  • I first had cramps where my corpus Luteum cyst was. It's just a dull pain. Had it checked out and it's completely normal. I now feel a sharp twinge on my left side by my left ovary and then have cramps all over, similar to period cramps but less severe. I've had ultrasound for other issues and everything is fine. The tech told me those cramps and pains will happen because your uterus is stretching. Since you are having two, I can only imagine that's why you might be feeling it. I'm no doctor but if it's not severe I wouldn't worry. Your body is going through major changes, making room for 2 babies! :)
  • My first reaction when I saw the title of the post was ... Better question is what cramps aren't normal? I've had one healthy full term pregnancy and two miscarriages and just got my NGO last week. Through my experience I can tell you if it doesn't double you over, continue painfully for more than a hallf hour, or come in waves it's completely normal.
AF like cramps can usually be curbed by drinking a big glass of water. Pinch and twinging cramps are difficult to make go away but daily stretching helps. GL ;-)
  • ^^NGO lol bfp* sorry
  • I've been cramping for about two weeks. My uterus just feels annoyed and swollen.

  • Cramping without bleeding is how I discovered I was pregnant.  I had taken 2 hpt the week prior but both were neg.  I figured before I went to my GYN I'd take another and it was positive!  The cramping had me very worried at first, but I've read (as well as many of your posts) that it is normal and that has reassured me some.  Coming from a m/c in June 2011 I'm afraid every little thing is a sign of another m/c.  These message boards are great for comparing notes and gaining reassurance!
