Eff the Girl Scouts

This popped up on my FB stalker feed

Stupid GS and their religious tolerance and promotion of women's health. Is it bad I plan on keeping the cycle of child labor going by continuing to buy lots of cookies? LMK

Well, damn, guess I'll just have to say a non-religiously diverse prayer while stuffing my face ;)

  • Well, these all seem like even more reasons for Rosie to be in girl scouts. Other than the fact that it means cookie sales. Our troop 6th grade year used the cookie sales to go to Disney World. It was awesome.

  • DD was a Girl Scout and loved it. The reasons I have heard for girls not being members are finances and time, not an actual issue with the GS organization. The author is a dingbat.

  • I read the article about safety requirements and rolled my eyes. I had to pass those same requirements as a GS.

Yup, you need to pass a swimming test to go into deeper water. SHOCK. Even with guards on duty, lakes can be dangerous. It's hard to find someone who slips under in a lake. Girls should be able to swim. And yes, you need training to use a canoe. The point is that if you get into trouble (tipping or losing paddles) you can rescue YOURSELF, not have to wait for help. Kind of important.

@RondackHiker I went on a "Canoe Trek" for GS camp one year. 2 girls actually did capsize their canoe in a river. People that don't think safety is important are nuts!

I've been canoeing for years and have managed to tip without meaning to. Shit happens. You can get caught up or in a bad current and may not be reachable. You MUST be able to handle a tipped canoe alone.

My parents used to make us kids do a yearly tippy test to take the canoes out. And we had to do it with all our siblings. It was a long time before my littlest sister and I could go out together since we struggled to until the canoe due to our combined size.

  • I will never give up my thin mints. I tried those grasshopper cookies from kebbler to try and tide me over, they are just not the same. It must be all the child labor that makes them taste so good.

  • C would be a girl scout if they would take him. Rather that than the BSA.

I agree with her on the cookie sales, while prices have gone up troops don't get as much as they used to I don't think. But the rest of is the writer being an asshole and bigot. I think faith based organizations can be great. I think people whining about non faith based organizations not adhering to their faith is so much bullshit.

  • Every time I see someone rant about the Girl Scouts organization being tolerant, I want to buy all of their cookies. Well, all the samoas and thin mints, anyways.

Wow, that article actually made me almost like the girl scouts, even though I was a Brownie dropout once I learned that instead of camp outs, building pine derby cars, and going birdwatching, girl scouts made christmas ornaments and stained glass. It seems my distain for crafting started early.

This was me exactly! I was such a tomboy, I wanted to use pocketknives and shit. I really like crafts now though :)

BTW, my mom was one of my Girl Scout leaders in the '80s and she had to go to training for camp.  That's not new.  We also had to do the tip test for canoes.  Why in the world would you want your daughter in deep water if she can't swim?

Cause lifeguards are clearly infallible and no one has ever drowned in a life guarded swimming area.
