Swimming lessons UPDATE PIP

Today we are taking DS to his first swimming lesson! Our ped gave us the okay and we will be using the tiny warm up pool for swimmers (round hottub size, refilled after ever use, perfect temperature for babies, and no chemicals.) SO has been a competitive swimmer his whe life and is a college swim coach, so LO is in good hands, but I'm nervous!

Sorry for the AW post. Is anyone else planning on doing lessons this soon? I think the y offeres them for infants.

UPDATE: everything went great and LO loved every minute of it. We were in the pool for about forty minutes. Apparently babies can float on their backs, we just supported his head, it was really cool to see. I even NIP in the pool (more like a deep hot tub.)

I think I would have waited for 6 months if my SO wasn't etching him, we didn't do much but splash and float but it was a nice family outing. Here are some pics (ignore my post baby rolls)

Not til she is bigger. The pools around here are too cold and too many chemicals. I was a swimmer though and my other 2 love the water so it is only a matter of time.

My gym offers them starting at 4 months but I'll probably wait until around 6 months- mainly because his bathing suit is a bit too big and I don't want to buy a smaller one! By the way, my son has the same outfit as your little one. So cute!

Aww, wish we had an indoor pool around here, I'd teach her myself. We'll have to wait until summer :(

The pool by our house starts giving lessons at 6 months so that is when we will start. I love to swim and can't wait to get Logan started, I'm hoping he will like it.

I guess this is my FFC-- I still haven't gotten DD her swim lessons. I plan to take them both next June. I was always paranoid to do it before she was walking.

We did swim lessons with DS1 when he was 4 months old. It was lots of fun! They had floaties and activities and songs. Towards the end of the two month long classes we ducked them under water to get them used to it but it was only briefly.

I was a certified swim teacher in the past. Just throwing in my 2 cents...depending on how small the children are...splashing and making bubbles, especially making bubbles is a prerequisite to learning to swim. Getting them to make bubbles in the water eventually leads to them putting their whole face in the water without being scared and knowing how to exhale underwater. This is so they don't get used to holding their nose and can actually start to swim proficiently.
Also it makes it "fun" so they are not frightened of the water as some, not all kids are.
So splashing and making bubbles shouldn't last a whole summer lesson, but I would expect it in the beginning, at least for the first week. :)

@PrimRoseMama DS is almost three and hasn't had lessons. We didn't have the option before this year and I was too pregnant and lazy to start this summer. I'm starting both kids next year too.
Thank God I am not the only one. :P

I'm thinking around 6 months for Hunter too. DH seems really excited about it, so I'm hoping he'll take him, and it can be something they do together.

Us too...the sooner the better! We are lucky to have a solar heated pool where we live so we could get LO in the water before the summer ends! He loved it, he was falling asleep :)

Glad for this thread! SO and I just started discussing swimming lessons for LO just the other day. SO was on his highschool swim team, and I spent most of my childhood in various bodies of water, so we hope to share our love of swimming with LO. Also we hope that by getting him in the water as soon as possible, he'll take to it easier.

@NKF312, what an off-the-wall reason! Did he say it with a straight face?

No and he's usually very laid back, I think his point was more that they have little control of their body at this point so he doesn't think it's safe... That said I've heard plenty of arguments on both sides of starting swimming this young... I think we will just wait til 6 months when most of the mommy and me classes start

We've signed up for Mommy & Baby lessons through our public parks & rec program with the city, they start at 6 months and the next session starts early January which will be perfect. I'm excited :)

I'm a horrid swimmer. But DH is a life guard. I can't wait for him to take LO swimming next summer.

We have a pool, and take LO swimming 3-4 times a week. We blow in her face a dunk her (she smiles so big when she comes up) and let her float on back. There is also a little floaty she has that we put her in and she just splashes a kicks. We are signed up for a survival class in October since we have a pool in the backyard just in case.
