Blue cheese in my chopped salad today! Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Please give me some reassurance that I did not just cause irreversible damage. Calling MD tomorrow  - my chopped salad had blue cheese today and I ate it, like an idiot. What was I thinking?!?!?!?!?

  • Not all blue cheese is bad it is unpasteurized blue cheese that is an issue and it does not mean you have listeria. In future make sure to ask if its pasteurized or not but I dont think its worth getting super worked up over I would mention it to your Dr though

  • Haha! Its just fine! Don't even worry about it! I eat goat cheese from the farmer's market every weekend. You and the baby are gonna be just fine.

Are you in the US? If so, the chance of it not being pasteurized is 1%. You're fine.

This. Almost everything is pasteurized in the US, and especially at restaurants.  The only time I double check is when it's imported cheese at the specialty counter.

    So don't worry - you're fine :)

  • Even if it wasn't pasteurized all you do is increase your risk of listeria. It's not like blue cheese itself causes birth defects.

  • Get this... I CHOSE to eat blue cheese from time to time with my last pregnancy.  Honestly, it totally depends on your doctor as to which foods they recommend to stay away from.  My doctor gave me a list, and I didn't stick to it.  Another doctor would tell you to eat whatever you want.  Some (mostly in other countries) even say a glass of wine a day is fine.   I made smart choices, as I plan to this time.  But I had soft cheese and deli sandwiches when I really really wanted to!

look... like everyone said.. it's FINE.

and for a little perspective... think of all the nut cases that are out there drinking like fish, smoking like a teepee, and sticking needles of herion in their veins.. and many of them (I'd venture a guess that most of them) manage to have healthy babies... so... I think your little bit of Blue Cheese is PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE, and certainly nothing to worry about.

here's something to ponder.. when my grandmother was preggers in the 50's.. her doc suggested she START SMOKING to "CALM HER NERVES"... No joke! And she did! She smoked like a freight train, and had 5 perfectly healthy babies! My point is, yeah.. we should be thoughtful about what we ingest during pg, but I'm of the belief this whole hemmoraging of all the things you "CANT DO/EAT/DRINK" is incredibly overblown, and causes a ton of unnecessary stress on expecting moms! And you can add "STRESS" to the list of things that are BAD for BABY! (proven stress hormones in moms blood are the same as the levels of the stress hormones in the amniotic fluid!)

The whole "listeria" thing is such a small, small... REMOTE possibility ANYWAY... you stand about the same risk (IMO) from the lettuce you ate in that salad as you do from the Blue Cheese. I've been up for 21 hours or I'd google the research for you... but...I'm just.too.tired. to do it right now....

Chin up buttercup! I'd bet a year of pedicures that your blue cheese did no harm!

I'm not going all the way until may without blue cheese. I'll take the risk. This baby ain't ruining my Christmas!

  • oh man... I had feta last night.  Didn't even think about it to be honest, I was so hungry I inhaled a huge plate of Chicken Souvlaki/greek salad/fries in about 3 bites...I'm shocked I didn't lick the plate!
