1st Trimester

For those who were charting

I'm not pregnant yet (currently TFAS), but for those of you who were charting and had a week or more gap between due date based on LMP and due date based on O, how did your doctor set your due date?

I don't think it would normally be a big deal as long as the dating ultrasound is close enough to where you should be, but I tend to O on the later side of normal and since I'd like to VBAC with my second, one week could make a huge difference near the end.

Re: For those who were charting

  • I'd "adjusting" my LMP ahead of time. Going by LMP would give me a due date 6 days earlier than going by O.

Baby #1 was 6 days late (came on his own, no induction). When it comes down to the wire and they say "you will be induced on X day if baby isn't here yet", those days matter!

  • Oh I didn't know anyone else did this, but I adjusted my LMP too. I O'd on CD21 so it made a difference by a week. Haven't asked my doctor about it yet, my first appt is in 2.5 weeks. I got my BFP the first time I O'd after stopping BCP (4 mos later), so I had no idea what my normal cycle length would be.

  • I ovulated on CD10, so I knew my due date based on LMP was probably going to be off.  But I gave the doctor my LMP date anyway, because I don't think it's ever a good idea to start off a relationship with a new doctor based on a lie.  I figured the dating ultrasound would clear everything up.  And it did.   I told the doc that I was charting temps and was pretty sure I ovulated on X date, and sure enough the baby measured exactly to the day that I ovulated on.  So she adjusted my due date to match the u/s.   It was no big deal.

Bottom line, I wouldn't "adjust" your LMP date, but I would be sure to tell the doctor that you were charting and think you ovulated on X date, and request a dating ultrasound.   If you don't get one, but want to do an NT scan, then just make sure that your u/s will still be within the right window based on both LMP and your ovulation date.

  • We had a dating u/s with my first and it put us a week behind LMP like I knew so then due date was based on that. Honestly, prob would have been easier to just change my LMP date when talking with doc.

  • I ovulate around day 20-22 and with my first three the doctor adjusted the due date by a week-ish each time after the dating ultrasound. I'm sure the same thing will happen this time!
Waiting on #4 to arrive :)

  • Last time there were 5 days b/w EDD based on LMP and based on O and my MW agreed to use O date. This time my EDD based on O was 2 days earlier than based on LMP and MW agreed to go with O date again. When I first went to my GP last time before I saw the MW he ignored O date and went with LMP.

Yeah, if you're concerned they won't go with O date, then just 'adjust' the date of your LMP. ETA: This is based on my experience in Canada where it is not common practice to receive dating ultrasounds.

  • My doctor wanted my LMP, he said he doesn't go by when we think we ovulated. Charting or not, things could be off. So he goes by LmP, then does a dating ultrasound or 2.

  • Doctor originally set at the date of LMP (3/18), but I shared that I was charting and using OPKs and had regular 30-35 day cycles and my date was 3/24. He did a dating ultrasound and it came in at 3/26.

Since that was more than a week from the LMP date, he adjusted the official date to 3/26.

  • My doctor still goes by my LMP (EDD4/7) and not my Ovulation Date (EDD4/4) despite the fact that I've now had two u/s that say I am exactly as far along as I should be following my OD.

It's only three days, so it's not a big deal, but I was charting/temping and I knew when I ovulated and it rankles to have the doctor ignore you anyway.

  • I dont think that lieing to you doctor is ever a good idea. You will get a dating ultrasound which will be what they go by I have long and irregular cycles I gave my dr my LMP and told showed them my chart neither really mattered until after 6wks when they did a dating ultrasound and set my due date

  • I ovulated on CD 17 the month we conceived.  Based on my LMP, I was 7w6d when I went in for my dating ultrasound.  I measured at 7w4d which I though was correct because I've never ovulated on CD 14.  I can't remember if I mentioned it to my OB, but she said that we'd just keep the due date based on my LMP.
  • My dr will adjust my due date at the first us and base it on measurements

That's exactly what my prior OB would have done.  They said they don't adjust the due date unless the dating ultrasound is off by more than a week.  With DS, he measured 5-6 days behind almost my entire pregnancy.

  • Thanks for all the input.  I don't think I'd feel comfortable adjusting on my own either, but would want my doctor to have all the info.  I didn't know my O date with DS, but had a suspicion.  I'm glad I'll be armed with more information next time.  I was mostly just curious as to whether or not doctors have actually moved the due date for those who were sure via temping.

  • Not everyone gets a dating ultrasound.  With my first, there was nearly a two week difference as I was having quite long cycles.  Fortunately, I had a provider who listens to and trusts her patients so it was a non-issue and we went with my ovulation date.  Ultimately it is your pregnancy so if it comes down to it in the end, stay firm with your dates.

I just went to my first Dr appt. I O'd on CD 60 so yea, my LMP EDD was SUPER off. Based on charting my EDD is May 23, but according to LMP its April 8. I was happy that my doctor seemed to be convinced that I am only about 6 weeks and not 12. I think I would have to find a new doctor if she tried to fight me on that one. A dating US should confirm how far along you are.

  • LMP is just a guideline at this point so the doctor's office knows when to schedule your first checkup. Your due date will be adjusted once at your first ultrasound and then possibly again after week 32 if you're measuring very far ahead.

If you're planning VBAC you'll have to wait till you go into labor naturally anyway, won't you?  Unless you find a doctor who will do a VBAC induction, but many don't like to. So actual due date is basically up to the baby.

  • @jenb_99 - Yes, that's exactly right.  I don't know of any practices around here that will induce a VBAC.  The catch is that most won't let you go more than a week past your due date either (as opposed to two weeks with no prior cesareans).  With my first, my doctor stuck with my due date based on LMP even though the ultrasounds consistently measured behind by 5-6 days. If my due date is a week earlier than it should be based on LMP, I feel like I wouldn't be giving myself the best chance of going into labor naturally.

  • I didn't have the discrepancy (my LMP and O date edds were only a day apart), but my OB does a dating u/s for every patient and bases the due date they use off that.  I had mine today and the due date they gave me is actually 2 days before my O date edd - baby is measuring a little big.
