Water Breaking & Protecting Mattress

I know the likelyhood of my water breaking in bed or even at all before going to the hospital are slim, but would you suggest placing something on mattress to protect it? We have a tempurpedic and really don't want amniotic fluid soaking into my mattress.

  • I put a mattress protector I got for our crib on my side of the bed just in case. Better safe than sorry.

We got one, too. I figured with leaky boobs, baby spit up, and other fun liquids that it would be worth getting one, even if my water doesn't break in bed.
    I second this!

  • I would invest in a waterproof cover and this will also be of use afterward if you get night.sweats like I currently do... I wake up a hot sweaty mess most days and am glad my matress is safe!!
  • Yep, waterproof mattress protector. Even if your water doesn't break in bed, you'll be glad when your boobs leave a puddle, or the baby pees all over your sheets. ;)
I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • I have a waterproof mattress cover. And I sleep on pee pee pads. No shame.

  • I would get a waterproof mattress cover too, but I am kind of hoping my water does break in bed so I can get a new mattress! Ours sucks.

  • My water broke in bed last week.  It didn't go through the mattress cover.
  • Get a waterproof mattress protector. They make lovely ones now that don't feel like plastic or make crinkly noises. You'll need it no matter what. We keep one on our bed year round. My water has never broken, but after the baby, your boobs will leak like crazy and the night sweats will soak your sheets. I'll admit, ours has stains on it from both my side and my husbands. It looks gross. That's just from normal middle of the night sweating. But we can take it off and wash it anytime we need to. The mattress underneath is pristine.

This is what my husband and I did. We just got our mattress 2 months ago, and don't want to ruin it.
  • It's a good idea to have one with LO anyhow. We used our bed to change, as a hang out spot while I got ready, etc. It saved our mattress more than a few times.

  • Matress cover for sure ... But you can also add a disposable bed pad or if you have a pet wee wee pad. I have one for my car just in case!

So true! I had one on my bed in case my water broke. I was induced, so my water was broken at the hospital. A few weeks after giving birth to my little girl, she peed through her diaper and all over the bed. I washed the mattress cover and put it right back on the bed in case of future accidents.

  • I really like the pet pee pad idea! I totally admit to buying a new mattress pad a few months ago, and went with a fancy shmancy silk one. I distinctly remember the sales lady looking me up and down and going straight to the waterproof mattress covers, and I gave her the stink eye and refused her suggestions.

Yep, I have been sleeping with a pee pad for a couple of weeks. The only bummer is that it is really, really good at absorbing moisture. So, any sweat or just humidity in the air makes it feel damp and then I wake up and think I peed or my water broke. It is making me paranoid.

  • I hate my mattress and it is getting old so I'm kind of hoping my water breaks in bed so I have no excuses to not get a new one! LOL  I would get a waterproof mattress pad to save it.  Better safe than mess up a perfectly good mattress.

  • My water totally broke in bed!   Like 2 minutes after I put my head down to go to sleep lol

Fortunately I'd been putting a towel down for about a week prior.  It protected the mattress just fine.  I'm doing the same this time but I also added one of my DD pee protectors under the flat sheet since I had them on hand.

  • Last time around I put a towel under me. My water broke the day before my due date while I was laying in bed. I had just gotten up to pee. I laid back down and felt a little trickle. I got up and right before I pulled my pants down next to the toilet, my water broke completely. I didn't have a mattress pad. Just had a towel.
