Low BP

Ladies, anyone with low BP? Almost till the end of my 7th month my bp was around 110/80. But it dropped down to 90/60. OB says thats ok, you should be happy about it. I do trust her but I am little tensed coz I also have GD but in limits with insulin. Anyone havebthis low BP, yesterday it was 84/52 & she's still saying it's ok.

Re: Low BP

  • My Bp isn't low now, but pre-pegnancy I regularly run 90/50. Even high 80s /40s. If doctor says it's okay I wouldn't get to worried about it!

  • Mine was low last week as well, and my ob said it was fine as well. It's been fine the entire pregnancy, and was back to normal this week.

My normal is around 90/60, but when I was admitted the first time with dd, it dropped way lower and they had a little freak out. Just keep an eye on it.

First, it helps to understand what the numbers of a blood pressure reading mean.

The top number measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats, or when the muscle contracts. The bottom number measures the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats, when the muscle is filling with blood.

From what I'm reading on heart.org, you really only need to be concerned if your BP is high. Our BP is lower during pregnancy, taking a crazy dive in 2nd tri then eventually coming back up, but still not at our normal rate until after we deliver. It makes sense because our body is working so hard with its extra blood volume, that the heart pumps harder to support it, making our pulses a little faster than normal.
According to heart.org the lower your BP the better, within certain limits. As long as you are not experiencing symptoms of low BP, there should be no cause for concern. It helps to remain super hydrated as even being mildly dehydrated (especially during pregnancy) can cause these symptoms. Symptoms include:
    • Dizziness or lightheadedness
    • Fainting (called syncope)
    • Dehydration and unusual thirst
Dehydration can sometimes cause blood pressure to drop. However, dehydration does not automatically signal low blood pressure. Fever, vomiting, severe diarrhea, overuse of diuretics and strenuous exercise can all lead to dehydration, a potentially serious condition in which your body loses more water than you take in. Even mild dehydration (a loss of as little as 1 percent to 2 percent of body weight), can cause weakness, dizziness and fatigue.
    • Lack of concentration
    • Blurred vision
    • Nausea
    • Cold, clammy, pale skin
    • Rapid, shallow breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Depression

  • My BP dropped a few weeks ago when I almost fainted. You'll KNOW when your BP is too low, lol! I was hot but I had the chills, sweaty, dizzy, and couldn't stand. It lasted about fifteen minutes. I was in the presence of a nurse and a paramedic so I was fine, I declined going to the hospital, and I've been fine ever since. Low BP is not so much as a condition in my case as it is just an event. I attributed my issue to not eating a lot that day and only getting two solid hours of sleep. Bad idea!

All of this, you only need to be concerned with high. I asked my dad the same question who specializes in high blood pressure and he said there really isn't a "low".

  • Mine has been right around that low for the past 3 visits, no concerns from any of the midwives.  When I am not pregnant it is normally that low though.

  • My BP has always been very low.  They comment on it but no one shows concern and it did not effect my son's pregnancy or birth.  If the doctor is okay I wouldn't worry.

This! Mine is always low. My doc never worries :-)
