My furry little brother (sad)

Just after I graduated from HS my brother and I were still living at home and he got a puppy. It was a little bear cub of a dog, half black lab and half malamute. We all fell in love with him the moment we saw him, and we named him Barrow after a town in Alaska.

He is the best dog. My brother couldn't afford obedience classes, but Barrow never needed them. I started calling him my furry little brother because that is what he really is to me. He is the kindest, gentlest, most loving dog. He loves to chase squirrels on my parents 2 acres. He loves to lay under the hazelnut trees and watch the birds. He is afraid of water and thunder. He adores playing tug of war in the house and dragging me across the living room on the rug.

He is 12 years old, has cancer, hip problems, heart problems, trouble breathing, and a host of other old doggie issues. In the past week he has been in terrible pain, even with the high dosage pain medication he has. In the past few days we've had rain storms. All he wants to do is go outside and lay in the rain for hours and not come back in. The last two nights he has been up all night whining and in obvious excruciating pain. My brother and my parents made the decision to have him put to sleep. And my heart is broken.

It will happen just after 10:00 pacific, and if you could give any thoughts or prayers to him, that he could be at peace, and be happy it would be very nice. Thank you.
I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.

  • That's heartbreaking, but it's good that he won't be suffering anymore.

  • How sad! His description reminds me of DH's old dog. Literally a ball of fluff. It may hurt to do this but his quality of life just wasn't where it should be and he won't suffer anymore.
  • Very heartbreaking and well wishes to you and your family.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. Making those decisions are so hard and heartbreaking, even when it's done out of love and mercy. (now you've got me all teary eyed at work!)

  • Aw RIP puppy! I'm sorry your family had to make this decision, however I'm glad he's no longer in pain.

  • We had to put our dog down last month and it was horrible, the most difficult thing we have ever done.

Try to remember when he was at his best. He no longer has to feel pain and he had a wonderful long life with your family. My thoughts are with you.

  • You're doing the right thing, but I know that doesn't make it feel any less painful.

Thinking of you and your sweet pup.

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. They really do become part of the family. You love them like they're your own, you wouldn't give them up for anything.

We put down my 17-year old cat two weeks ago. Worst timing ever. I've never gone with a pet to see them put down, and this was my first cat, and I loved him soo much. I almost feel like seeing that traumatized me. Like, something in my heart just broke, and it hasn't felt the same since. I miss him so much... but after seeing him the way he was (a tumor in his mouth that grew in under a month) I knew it was the right thing to do.

It's just time. Lots of Ts and Ps for you and your brother. Your pup will know peace soon enough.

  • I am so sorry! Our lab of 13 years suddenly died on Labor Day and I an still SO upset about it... So I know how hard it is, especially with the pregnancy hormones in full effect. Thinking of you...
