  • We had him pick out a present for baby brother and we got him the same thing, just a different color, for baby brother to "give" to him. They are little wooden race cars. :)
I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • Dd is getting a new doll, and I don't know what to get ds. He's 5 and I'm tired of picking up toys!

  • Can someone please explain the purpose of this? It seems silly/pointless to me, and I've never heard of it before coming to these forums.

  • I made DD a small gift bag for everyday that I'm going to be in the hospital. They are filled with coloring books, crayons, big sister books, snacks, small toys, etc. For the day we come home from the hospital, we purchased her a double sided easel that will be set up in the hous when we walk in. Figured that will keep we distracted for awhile.

  • Not from us, but I know my Mom and MIL are bring him a ton of gifts... as always. He is 20 months and so he doesn't get the entire concept. If anything based on what he gets from others, we will get him some new things to keep him busy while we are inside and I am BF'ing all day long :P
  • No. That wasn't even on my radar. MOTY over here.

I'm sure one of her grandmas will bring her some new toys or books when they come to stay and help. DD is almost 3 though so to her a new person is the coolest thing ever.

  • Yes and no..... In the hospital they are getting something and being told it is from the new baby. BUT it is more of a "be quiet and behave, here is a snack" gift... Yep. I have learned from having them up there before. Plus, they are coming right after school. Which is snack time. I am trying to see if they can stay till Pa and SIL come up so they can all have dinner together.

Each was bought a lunchbox (on sale now that school is in) tha I can use for those in school later. Inside the lunchbox is or will be a snack, juice box, crayons, small coloring pad, stickers, 2 tiny things of playdough, and the boys got 2 cars and DD got 2 tiny tiny dolls. Less than $10 was spent on them.

Don't need toys to amuse them while I breastfeed baby. 2 are in school and the other 2 have toys to play with.

  • I got DS a little Thomas backpack, which I will fill with 2 books about being a big brother and some take n go Thomas trains and tracks, so he has something to play with/show the baby while he's visiting at the hospital.

I also got a little "big brother" stuffed bear for the baby to give him when we arrive home...was going to take it to the hospital but don't want it to get all yucky there...

I'm getting my girls a $10 snuggle pod baby doll each. It will fulfill a few different purposes. 1st being, small kids can feel anxiety and jealousy of the new little baby who is taking up so much of mommy and daddy's time. The gift is to help show DD1 and DD2 that not only do we have a new baby in the house, but they are the big sisters and that's very special. For me, I know when I visit friends and family who have a new baby, we always bring a present for the new baby and big sibling gifts too. Nothing expensive, but becoming a big sibling is special and deserves acknowledging. The second purpose for us, is that they will have a little baby doll they can bring home from the hospital and "mother" while my hands are full with #3.

  • I got my daughter a baby doll, stroller, diaper bag with bottle and diapers and a pack n play-they all are accessories for the doll. I figured she would love it, but also when I am feeding LO or changing diaper etc I can encourage DD to do so with her baby. That way she can be like mom and not feel so lefr out during those times.

  • I put a bag together for DD1. There is a slight possibility she will have to go to the hospital with us. My grandma is suppose to come get her, but lives 45 minutes away. The bag has activities and snacks so she doesn't get bored.
  • I decided to combine new sibling gift with some busy box gifts for her to have while I need to take care if baby. DD1 is 2.5 and this is what I have (so far lol) - Melissa and Doug princess puzzle, M&D magnetic "dress the horse", a reusable sticker book of horses, a magna doodle, a look& find Monsters Inc book, Color Wonder coloring books and markers, a bunch of stickers, some glow sticks, and I'm sure I'm missing stuff.

I don't want DD1 to be jealous or feel left out when everyone is bringing things for the new baby and not her because she is a little young to understand (heck, she gets jealous at other kids birthday parties that she can't open their gifts lol). I am also having her chose a gift to buy the new baby so she is included in that as well (she wants to buy baby a blanket so that's what we are going to go pick out and wrap up together). I also know I needed to buy her new, quiet time activities to keep her entertained by herself when I need to focus all my attention on the baby.

  • Thanks @SuperTreesa & @yesthisiskim0401

In my head, I could only compare it to the whole push present thing which is why I was confused. I still don't plan on getting Gia anything, but I understand the concept a little better. Gia's still not getting anything though. She has far too many toys as it is. I have let her pick things out for the baby when she's asked though.

this is not even close to the same concept as a push present.  it's only to help a little one grasp the concept of  new child, feel included and hopefully a little less anxious. it's a huge change, why not try whatever you can to ease the transition??

  • Yes.  I'm still undecided though, either a new Buzz Lightyear (the expensive one because we had the cheap one from the Disney store but it broke, he's handicapped-amputee-Buzz now.  Actually it's broken three times but the first two DH was able to put him back together.)  OR this rocketship playset I found on Amazon.  I'm sure we'll probably tell him it's from us, not from the baby, because I think he's old enough to understand that unborn babies can't go shopping.

  • I got her some books and craft things.. Mainly to have something new and interesting to keep her busy in the hospital when she visits, or at home when other people are watching her.

  • Oh I also have a bag of random "treats" or little surprises for after we get home.  It has a sticker book, a little snake toy thingy, a little airplane, a bead set, mostly $1 bin type junk but he gets really excited about little things like that and they are great for when I need to distract him or kill a bad mood fast.

  • DS has a newfound obsession with trains as of late. I will most likely get him some sort of container (back pack, lunch box) and put crayons, coloring books, snacks, and some trains. Or whatever is on sale at the moment I put it together but I will try to stick with the trains for now.
  • We bought DD1 the Sofia the first costume and accessories. This will be her Halloween costume as well. Two birds, one stone! :)

Not sure if he likes Thomas and friends but I did receive a book from toysrus showing a train sale until 9/28. worth looking into.

He does! I have received no such flyer, toysrus is slacking for me lol. Are their sales nation wide or regional?

I haven't seen any of those take and play sets just the chuck the truck ones and those seemed a little bulky to me. I'm going to have to go out this weekend and look for them along with the train sale PP mentioned!

Because I don't feel like it's necessary. It's not like I'm going to kick her to the curb when the new baby comes. DD1 is still very high needs and requires lots of care throughout the day so she'll be invited to snuggle when I nurse the baby, and she's in the  "helper" phase so I think letting her fulfill that role will be far more beneficial to her. Buying her a toy isn't going to do shit to curb any jealousy or make her feel included.

  • I agree with @supersecretstatus, it is a huge transition of course but buying a toy or present is not going to make DD1 happier for more than a few minutes. Making her feel included and an active sibling will. I'm going to make sure she still has 1x1 time with me, and has "special jobs". A few books to keep her busy makes sense, a new power wheels because she got a sister doesn't, to me.
