Group B Strep

Has anyone tested positive for group b strep? I have and was considering starting a probiotic.

Re: Group B Strep

  • They are still going to give you the antibiotics in the hospital.

  • I did :( I was told they would just give me antibiotics during labour to combat it.

  • I will have the antibiotic prior to labor but am curious if there is anything you can do to be proactive prior to labor.
  • Had it last time. This time took probiotics and garlic before the test so that it would be negative. Good idea to take a probiotic so that the side effects of the antibiotics are less but they'll probably still give it to you during labor. You might be able to ask the doctor to re-test.

  • Thank you. That advise is very helpful :)
  • Probiotics are great to take even if you don't have it. So I say go for it :)

  • If you start a regimen early enough in pregnancy, it can clear a GBS infection, thus preventing the need for intervention.  Since you are this late and have already tested positive, the CDC protocol of IV antibiotics is probably your best bet.  Like @awwwpuddin said, probiotics will really help fight the negative effects of those antibiotics (yeast infection, thrush, etc), so I'd say go for it!

  • I have been taking probiotics for a long time now and do not have GBS. I don't think they will test again if you start taking probiotics now... But it's worth a try and good for you anyway.

  • I tested positive. It has me freaked out but OB seems pretty nonchalant about it.  Probiotics could help you with it, but they will give you the antibiotic regardless.  OB told me that it could clear itself on its own by the time I went in to labor but that they will still do antibiotics to be safe.

  • I tested positive and I am taking a probiotic to help with any possible side effects from the antibiotic. If it clears the infection that's a bonus to me because that means baby can't get it, but I will have the antibiotics regardless.

  • I didn't have any side effects from the antibiotics the first time around. I just worry I won't make it to the hospital in time to be on the antibiotics long enough. What sort of probiotic are you guys taking?

I got to the hospital with DS at 10cm and ready to push.  They were still able to get 1 dose of the antibiotics in before he was born.  My midwife wasn't the least bit concerned, DS had no problems and they didn't do any extra monitoring or testing after he was born.  So...I wouldn't let that worry you too much.

  • I'm just eating lots of yogurt and kefir, but my care provider recommends this stuff:

I am doing this as well. I had three doses of antibiotics with DD2 and I took probiotics to help with the side effects of the antibiotics because I didn't want to deal with anything extra on top of recovering from labor and delivery.
