Lactose Intolerance - Food Suggestions?

I am lactose intolerant so I need to stay away from dairy. Any other moms to be with the same issue? And do you have any suggestions on what you should eat to make up for it?

I will be asking my doc about this at my first u/s appt. on the 9th, but I thought I'd ask you all in the meantime :) Thanks for your help!

  • I heard than many women who are lactose intolerant actually become tolerant during pregnancy

  • I'm dairy free because I'm BFing DS who is MSPI.  I use Almond milk and take both a pre-natal vit and Cal/Vit D supplement.

  • I'm really more lactose sensitive than truly intolerant.  I buy the lactose free milk because I love milk and other substitutes just aren't the same, and pretty much other dairy stuff like yogurt and cheese are ok (the bacteria have already broken down the lactose) and they don't bother me.
There are tons of other ways to get calcium, dairy isn't really a requirement at all.  You will be fine.

  • I developed an intolerance to milk when I was pregnant with DD. We switched to almond milk for cereal/granola use and I stay away from soft serve for the most part.  I'm ok with cheeses and ice cream, just not milk.

I would try almond milk (Silk's Unsweetened Vanilla is my favorite) - it has 50% more calcium than milk, so you'll get plenty of calcium that way.  Other foods like dark leafy greens, broccoli, almonds, and sardines are good sources of calcium as well.  And for vitamin D - enjoy the sunshine and take a prenatal with D :)

  • I'm allergic to ALL dairy. I took Tums for my calcium supplement pre-pregnancy. I still will continue to do so. Other ways I get my calcium are through veggies, soy milk, soy yogurt, etc. I will also be speaking to my OB to run this by him.

  • Ok I have almond milk so I will just stick to that. Unfortunately, I tried eating cheese again to see if I had become "un-intolerant"  due to being pregnant, but that was not the case... :((
