Overheard at the OB

I was sitting trapped in the exam room waiting for the dr and I could hear her in the other room with another patient. (I wasn't being nosy, my Dr is LOUD!) From what I could gather, the patient was there because she had....TWO VAGINAS.

I swear on my unborn child, this is not made up. Apparently it's not unheard of, and usually one is normal sized and the other smaller/thinner and presses up against the normal one. I suppose it's not THAT shocking, but it was definitely NOT the conversation I was expecting to start my day off with! I didn't even mind that my appointment got out an hour late after that.

The doc was saying that it happens more often than you'd think, and that it's similar to when someone has an extra thumb, etc. (along the lines of "nobody's perfect").

It was definitely about vaginas because OB told the patient about a girl whose boyfriend told her she needed to go to the doctor, she was a virgin and apparently had no clue something was different.

wait wait wait.  how the F can yoU NOT KNOW SOMETHING IS DIFFERENT from day one?? dr's check stuff out when you are born, and you would think your parents would notice???    and was this the girl's first visit at the OB / discussing this?

I don't know how you would broach that subject with someone, "excuse me, miss, I understand you're here for a check up but we need to discuss your extra vagina...!"

I don't know how you go through life not realizing you have a spare part, maybe the OB was trying to make the patient feel better? That was the conversation.

I have a uterine abnormality and did a lot of research on it, and this is way more common than you'd think (double uterus, double vagina, double cervix). I feel bad for people with issues that bad, I'm lucky that mine is relatively mild and allowed me to have two babies.

I think you ladies are picturing the wrong thing. Everything is double on the inside, not outside. It's not like she has two vaginal openings.

My cousin had this, they did not find out until she started her period and asked her mom where she was supposed to be placing the tampon.  My Aunt tried to help her and was shocked,  She did have surgery I believe.

When I worked for Planned Parenthood, we had a patient with two cervixes and had to label them accordingly. She had abnormalities and was in for a colposcopy. It was the first I had heard about that possibility, but the Physician Assistant who saw her had seen it many times before and was able to explain it to the patient to keep her from being weirded out about it. She didn't have two vaginal openings, just split inside.

 I know..I know...but she def had two openings and so imagine if you are like 12 or 13 and get your first period and people are trying to explain where it goes and yours is not what they are saying...I know I would freak out.  But yes my Aunt was thoroughly confused as to what she was saying and was more confused after trying to help....regardless she is fine now.

Yup it's true..... One of my residents was born with two vaginas and without an anus so they had to make one of them into her anus, weird

I've heard of it before. Most don't find out until they start their period because the second opening is higher not side by side. Most can't wear tampons and if I remember correctly sex is painful

Hopefully it defaults to the bigger one, or the one with the correctly positioned opening....

The one that has a cervix and uterus attached, I'd guess.
