Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Anyone else have a "happy spitter"?

DD2 was born on July 27th and from day one, has had an issue with reflux. At 3 days old we were sent for an abdomen ultrasound to make sure everything was ok. She spits up with every feeding. Sometimes it's just like normal baby spit up and other times it's a lot more. At 19 days old we had to add oatmeal to her bottle to thicken it up in hopes it helps keep the breast milk/formula down. We burp every 1/2 ounce but it doesn't seem to matter. She doesn't appear to be in any discomfort from spitting up and for the most part seems pretty content most of the time. She typically eats 3 ounces every 3-4 hours during the day. Does anyone have any other things they have tried that has helped with the spit up? I am hoping she out grows this sooner rather than later.

  • Pepcid helped my baby with it. And keeping him in a rock n play or swing when he's not being held. The incline helps especially right after feedings.

  • We try to keep her at an incline after eating.  At night she sleeps in her bouncy seat instead of her crib or PNP.  I am thankful it doesn't seem to bother her, I just wish I could find something to help with the spit up.

  • Breastfeeding at an incline.  Making sure he eats more on each breast so he gets more fatty milk.  Letting him "nibble" on my nipple or using a pacifier afterwards so the sucking sensation prevents spit up.  Holding him at an incline for at least 20 minutes after feeds before putting him down to sleep.
  • My LO spits up quite a bit, too. But it doesn't bother her, and she's content after. I brought it up to my pedi, and he explained to me that when LO's stomach squeezes to empty, some goes up instead of down as the muscles mature. So as long as she's not in any apparent pain or upset, it's fine. He suggested to incline while feeding, and for 30 minutes after to try and avoid spit up.
If you bottle feed, try to have LO sitting upright while feeding.
Kellysmom says that "excessive" spit up could be attributed to over supply or forceful let down in moms who BF.

  • Two of my three were/are happy spitters. One has reflux. There is a marked difference between the two.

I'm pretty sure they've all spit up due to my forceful letdown bc they don't spit up at all after bottles. Anyway, since it doesn't bother him, I just clean up spit up all day and am never more than two feet away from a burp rag. My refluxy one is on Zantac and he still pukes a bunch, but he doesn't cry in pain anymore.

  • Have you considered that it could be an allergic reaction?
My LO would spew.. and I mean SPEW out his spit ups.. just like your little girl it was after every feeding and it was border line throwing up.
At his Dr.s appt they checked if he was allergic to dairy.. and sure enough that was it.
He had a rash along with his extreme spit ups.. And once I cut dairy.. along with soy, wheat, and gluten.. everything cleared up and the spit ups stopped.
I'd see if your LO has the same issues with your breast milk/formula.
    Hope this helps!
  • Oh! P.s. I had an over supply too.. So try feeding her for a few min.. stop and burp her, then pick back up again.

    Warm wishes!
  • My first son was an extremely happy spitter upper! From the very beginning, he would spit up about 10 times per feeding (and that was on a good day). But every time he spit up, he would have a huge smile on his face and go about being his jolly self.  We could barely get him dressed to go outside because he would spit up so many times and keep soaking his clothes.  The spit ups were extremely large and not normal baby spit ups.  We just started layering bibs to we could remove them and not have to change his entire outfit.  We even started using waterproof blankets on the floor so he could crawl around/play ect because he covered everything and they were easy to wash.  The doctors tried everything (different positions, rice in the bottle, medicine, gastroenterologists etc) and ruled out everything.  They said that the amount seems like way more than it is and if the baby is gaining weight and happy, they will outgrow it.  Ultimately, it took 14 months but he finally stopped spitting up:)

I now have a 6 week old and can't begin to tell you how much easier it is without the spitting up issue.  Just be prepared to do a lot of laundry and get creative with how ways to deal with the spitting up.
