Nursing school with toddler & newborn?

Hi all.

Long story short, I got my bachelor's in journalism, worked as an editor for three years, and hated the news business.

So shortly after my first was born, I went back to complete my pre-reqs for nursing, and now my accelerated BSN program is starting in May. Which is obviously when I'm due.

I'm torn. I quit my job to focus on being a mommy and student, so we are relying on my husbands income for the next 2 years until theoretically I am hired as an RN. I don't want to delay the program (for financial reasons) but I also don't want to bite off more than I can chew with a newborn and a 2-year old.

Has anyone (successfully) gone through nursing school with babies, and did you hate your life or was is surprisingly OK (with lots of help)? I am a workhorse, been through craziness before, and never gotten less than a 4.0. I just don't know what it will be like with TWO babies instead of one! :/

Thank you!!
-Ashley

  • I went through dental hygiene school, and one of the girls in my class was pregnant and had a 2yo.. the program definitely isn't easy without kids, nevermind with kids, but she did it. With a lot of support from family and friends, helping out with her children, it was possible. You can definitely do it but it's not going to be easy.

  • It's hard to say - you sound like the kind of person that can handle it. I recently completed my master's degree and I'm about to take the 4th of 4 parts of the CPA exam next month and I have a 2.5 year old, and I work full time. It's been REALLY hard but I have a supportive DH who really helped me keep school and studying a priority and really stepped up in taking care of DS. If you have a situation like that, I say go for it and power through!

  • Thanks ladies ... yeah, we do have family that can/will help but I'm just apprehensive to stick them with two babies while I'm in class. That is a lot. My husband works graveyard shift so he sleeps all day, but might have to learn to adjust his sleeping schedule to make this work! Or maybe I have babysitters come to my house instead of vice versa, so hubby can feed/care for the baby and my mom/others can watch our toddler. Maybe I need to stop thinking about it so much and just have faith that we'll find a way!

  • I completed nursing school 6.5 years ago...it wasn't easy and I wasn't married or dating and had no kids. I did a BSN program that also has an accelerated program for those who already had bachelor's degrees. I know many of them worked, had families and still completed school. You might not br able to keep up the 4.0 with everything else, but with good support I would think it's possible.

  • I did pharmacy school with infant twins. Had things worked out as planned, I would have even graduated on time. Ended up on hospital bedrest and had to add a year to the program, but other that it was totally doable. Hard, but doable. I studied while the boys slept and DH really stepped it up. Definitely worth it in the end! You can do it, mama! Just be upfront with your professors about what's going on and I'm sure they'll work with you.
