October 2013 Moms

STMs- baby dropping

I am 37 weeks 4 days, I had a few different people tell me I have "dropped" and I think they are correct. I know that everyone is different and every pregnancy and labor is different but I'm just kind of curious what other moms have experienced. How long from when you "dropped" until you went into labor?

I am scheduled for a c-section on October 1 (due October 3) because of a previous pelvis fracture.

Re: STMs- baby dropping

  • Could be 1 day, could be 30.

  • I dropped at about 36 with ds and was still induced at 40w 3d due to BP rising.

Dropping is kind of like the MP it really doesnt mean much.

  • There is no relations to the baby dropping = labor coming. Same goes for mucus plug.

  • Thank you. That's kind of what I was thinking but I figured I'd ask anyways.
  • I got all silently hormone-ragey last night at my dad's house, when I tried telling my stepmom that sometimes women don't "drop" before their babies were born, and I got dog-piled by everyone present about how untrue that was.  Well ok, whatever, I guess I'm never gonna have this baby because I haven't dropped at 36 weeks, y'all.  8-|

FTR, neither MH nor I can remember if my belly ever dropped with DS.

  • I feel like I have "dropped" multiple times with this LO, but LO deecided to rise again. I can tell because bump looks a little lower, heartburn is not as bad, I feel movement WAY down there, and my back/pelvis KILLS me. Right now baby has dropped, again.... but who knows LO's plan.
  • I've been dropping for weeks now. So frustrating. I just have to pee like every 20 minutes.

Yup, my babies don't drop until I'm actively pushing. They like hanging out up and in front of the pelvis. But once I start pushing they come out in a hurry. So not dropping doesn't slow down delivery. My midwife asked me to to start wearing a maternity belt at my last appointment to coax the baby down into the pelvis and maybe I won't go to 41+ weeks with this baby. But that belt is crazy uncomfortable.

  • i asked my OB this last time. she said that "dropped" is a made up term by people who don't know what they're talking about. there is no official measurement of "dropped".

  • "Dropping" is just the baby moving down into the pelvis. If you look at a fundal height chart, it should be around 36 weeks.

  • I droped before or right at 32 weeks, at 32 weeks 1 day when I was in L&D for PTL the On Call Dr. Could "poke the baby's head" it was so low.  I am 36 weeks tomorrow and so far I have been closed and thick so I don't think it means anything.

  • I definitely haven't dropped. This baby is still all up in my bidness.

    Me either.

Not even when I was in labor
:(( she just was too big to drop, hence my c/s
  • i didn't drop until i was about 8cm dilated last time. Baby was still at -2 basically until I started pushing.

this time, people have been telling me I "dropped" since I was about 25 weeks....

Dropping doesn't mean anything, my cervix is still long and baby is still at -3 station, even though I haven't been able to cross mylegs for weeks, and have started having to sit with my legs a bit spread to make room for the lowest bump ever.

Truly I'm sorry you got all ragey but I'm SO GLAD that I'm not the only one this happens to. MIL swears up and down that it's impossible to have a VBAC because you "have" to have a c section the second time if you've had one previously. *eye roll* Makes me all stabby

  • With my first child my OB - who has delivered over 6,000 babies - checked me at 36 weeks and said, "Wow. Do you have your bag packed?"  PJ hung out, super low, and everyone told me he was coming early. HA HA: he arrived almost 2 weeks late and we were induced.

  • Like some of the others have already posted, I never dropped with any of my 4.

I'm going to have to agree with this. Both my babies (even my breech one) settled down low very early on. Today I was told by the sonographer that if she were an inch lower I'd be giving birth- yet my bump is very high. I have a short torso so her butt is right underneath my middle rib area and she stretches all the way down. I don't think it's possible to drop any more.

  • She's always been low, so she never dropped. But my cervix did shorten, so she "dropped" 3cm and my fundal height is all off and crazy. She's been engaged for 6 weeks and I'm still pregnant. The doctors are always shocked at how low she is. It really doesn't predict when you'll go into labor.

  • I never dropped either with LO#1.  Not even in labor.  They had to use forceps to go in and get 'em.

  • Not sure if I dropped. Each week after I think 34 weeks you could tell in my weekly bump pics that my belly was getting lower. Never felt any different to me. DS was born at 38w exactly.
