Good excuses for not drinking?

Does anyone have any good excuses for why you're not ordering a drink when you go out? I got busted last night at dinner with some friends, I always drink wine so clearly I'm pregnant when I order water, I couldn't think of another excuse quick enough :/

Re: Good excuses for not drinking?

  • - You don't want to drink and drive home
    - Hangover the next day is rough with 2 yr old
    - You drank too much the night before
    - You're on a medication

  • I tend to go with... Headache, stomach ache, or "if I start, I won't stop... And I have too much to do tomorrow!"
  • I'm going out later today and trying to think of excuses as well. I'm going to use the fact that I'm training for a half Ironman next spring, which I was until I took the test a few days ago! I'm not sure that'll hold up, since my friends know I think wine is healthy in moderation. That's the problem with trying to cover it up with family and friends...if they know you, they'll wonder what medication you're taking and why, where you were last night that you drank too much, etc. It's hard to keep it a secret, even if you have an excuse prepared!

  • That's the problem, I always have one glass of wine with dinner. I feel like they would totally not believe my excuses. I might just have to abstain from going out for a few more weeks if I really want to keep a secret ;)
  • the "I cant mix this medication Im on with alcohol" is a good one - no one knows what 'meds' youre on, and they're likely not going to challenge it.
Alternatively if you're with a big group just get 1 glass of something and 'sip' all night - likely no one will notice. This probably won't work with a small group, besties, or wine tho!

  • I always drink wine too, but I told my SIL "I'm on a gin & tonic kick lately" Then as soon as we ordered our drinks, I said I had to go to the bathroom, then found our waitress and asked her to just make it sparkling water in a drink glass with a lime.

  • Wow, you ladies are clever, I love it! I would never think to swap out my drink or tell the waitress

  • I've pulled the server aside and told them to bring me virgin drinks.

  • i like the "i'm on antibiotics" thing. its too personal for people to pry into, so they just leave you alone.
