XP: Synthroid question - WWYD?

I am hypothyroid and have been on Synthroid for over two years.  My levels were 5.7 when I was diagnosed but I have been fairly steady at 1.5 - 1.6 on thyroid replacement(outside of when I get pregnant then it spikes).  I went in for my baseline this week and my TSH was 2.9.  It has been drilled into me over the last couple of years by my RE that my levels should be under 2.5.  The problem is I am not cycling locally and am under the care of another RE – he says he is fine with levels up to 3.5.  I have considered upping my dose on my own but the lowest increase is double and I am worried I may go the other way (after my m/c my TSH dove down to .40).  I am trying to get my DE RE to do weekly testing (what my local RE suggested) but he thinks I am nuts.  I am just so frustrated.  WWYD?

  • Aren't your pills scored? Mine are. I'd cut them in half and take 1 and 1/2 pills. Also, will your local RE run the bloodwork for you? If not, do you have a regular doctor that will order labs?

Yes, there is a score on one side but I was told not to split them because apparently the dosage is not uniform throughout.

My local RE will only do the blood work that the other clinic sends requisitions for and my GP’s turn around time for tests is too long (it takes at least a week to get results).

I emailed my DE RE and I think have convinced him to test weekly.  If my test next week is the same I’ll just up it on my own.

Can you request a copy of your blood work and go to an endocrinologist?  If/when you get pregnant, at some point your RE will discharge you to your OB and you'll need to be monitored throughout the remainder of our pregnancy anyway. My endo wants mine below a 2 while ttc.

@weeklyplanner - I'm also going to RMANJ. I'm currently waiting for day one to start my bc in preparation for IVF. Their stats make me optimistic.

  • I agree with @ally510 you need to see an endocronologist who monitors you when TTC or not as you will always need the meds. I would not self medicate or change your dosage as going hyper can be equally as damaging!

I know weeklyplanner is on vacation so she won't reply for a while. (I also go to RMA of NJ.)
I went to an endocrinologist at the end of June and the endo was able to pull up all my lab results that RMA tested without having to ask for my records. I know RMA is also really good at giving you your records if you request them.
I'd check to see if your RE enters your lab results in a database.

  • I agree that you need to see an endo. It's better to get it stabilized before you get pregnant and start trying. I have found that my levels need to be on the high side of "normal" before I feel quite right. I also found that IF meds can affect my levels. Last thing I would want it to go through all the treatments just to have my thyroid levels affect it

  • If you need to up a little you may end up on a schedule like mine. I take one pill daily with a double dose on Tuesdays and Saturdays. I've been on that schedule since March and my levels have been much better.
