Buying shoes meant for the opposite gender-wwyd

We went shoe shopping today at Stride Rite and DD only wanted the Monsters Inc shows. But they are def. boys loafers. I dont mind girls playing with boy toys and vice versa but what about this? What would you do in my situation? We didn't get them and she didn't freak but she loved them soooo much :)

  • As long as they fit her feet properly I would do it.
  • My DD has boy's sneakers.  No big deal.
  • Loading the player...
  • If they fit, and they are in budget, I would get them.

  • I don't see why it matters?  Of course Eleanor mostly wears Callum's old shoes ;)  And Callum once had a pair of purple Keens because those were the ones he wanted.  Get her what she loves!
  • I agree with everyone else. I would have bought them

  • I have a feeling this would be my DD. She walks around wearing her brother's pajamas   Not sure what I would do though if it came to shoes.    I think Monsters Inc is cute, so I may lean towards getting them.   Spiderman or Ironman, I may lean towards not.

Thanks for the feed back from everyone else :) I know it's probably not that big of a deal but I just wanted to see what other moms thought.

  • wouldn't even think twice. My kid wore "boys" shoes forever because she didn't want hot pink, sparkly, or characters. She wanted dinosaurs, so she got dinosaurs.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Get the shoes if she loved them. My daughter loves Toy Story and thinks Buzz and Woody and Jessie are her best friends since she was 1.5 years old. They really don't make much in that theme for girls but plenty for boys. She didn't care for the house slippers but pajamas, Fall/Spring jacket, sweaters, shirts, gym shoes she wore with passion. I think only once have I heard from a complete stranger "Isn't that for boys?" and I said I don't care and neither should she. If it fits, wear it. She loves these characters and I don't recall the movies coming out and saying specifically that Toy Story - the movie for boys only. I do blame Disney for not making stuff like this for girls too. She adores Buzz and wanted to be Buzz Lightyear for Halloween but gave up her costume to her older cousin because he wanted to be him and she became Rapunzel from Tangled. And that decision was simply made because she loved her dress because it was purple and pink which are both her favorite colors.
In other words, let her have the shoes if she loved them so much, who cares what people think. What your kid thinks she be more important to you than them. This lets her express her love for her favorite characters. It also lets her express her creativity.
Right now I'm watching mine sleep in her Spiderman pajamas. She wanted those because it's daddy's favorite superhero.
  • I honestly wouldn't care.  I don't think I could get his chunker feet into girl shoes, but if he wanted something and they fit I would be fine with it.  Since his feet are hard to fit, we tend to not buy many pairs of shoes.  When I find a pair that fit and he likes we buy two pairs, one for daycare (outside) and one for home.  Then he'll wear those two pairs until he outgrows them.
