suddenly increased heart rate during stressful moment?

This afternoon at work I had a suddenly stressful moment, where I could feel my heart beating out of my chest. Of course, I was able to calm myself down in about 30 seconds. And I'm a normally very relaxed and calm person. What happens to the baby's heart rate during this very short moment (5- 10 seconds) of stress, until my heart rate goes down?

Re: suddenly increased heart rate during stressful moment?

  • Sorry to say I've had that happen to me a few times as well, but it takes longer than 30 seconds for me to calm down.  I think the baby's heartrate isn't as affected as we fear it is.

The point is to remember to be calm, and sometimes the heart-rate will elevate and won't even be because of some stressful event.  If it lasts more than an hour, I would call the telehealth hotline or a nurse.

It's scary, when it happens to me, I'm usually lying down.  I sit up and watch tv or soemthing boring like the weather channel, and it regulates itself.  Usually deep-breathing helps too.

  • I don't know, sorry.

But it's very common to have heart palpitations during pregnancy.  I have a very minor heart condition and my Dr has been monitoring it the whole time.  When I was about 16w, she sent me to a cardiologist and I had an echocardiogram done on my heart.  Basically a very in depth ultrasound of my heart.  I was really friendly with the u/s tech and she took a look at the baby's heart for me too.  So cool to see how completely developed and perfect her heart was at only 16w!!

I would mention it to your Dr, and ask for an EKG, just in case.

  • Prefacing this with, this info came from Natl Geograhic's "in the womb" the baby does get the stress too, but it is after mom does not during...the extent it did not go into.  I don't know how accurate it is, but NG is a pretty reutable source.
  • The baby is definitely affected by stress. ?As you get further along and can feel them move, you will notice that they will move if you are shouting/or speaking loudly. ?It takes a lot to harm them though, so don't worry. ?
  • This happens to me just randomly. Not only in stressful moments. My FI mom is a nurse and said if it happens longer than 15-30 seconds and I start getting short of breath to go to the ER. I havent had to go yet though thank god!
