we're potty training too, and LO won't poop in the potty either. I was at his physical and mentioned it to the doctor, and he said, "well, just put a diaper on at night and let him poop in it." We've been working so hard at it that it's hard not to feel defeated by that advice, but like the pedi said, he won't be in a diaper until he's 15, and getting all stressed out isn't good for any of us. One thing that has worked for us is we are letting him watch the tablet on the potty. This is currently the only way I can get him on without a meltdown. He sits like an angel for daycare, but not even M&M's are getting him to the pot at this point at home. I don't know why potty training has been so stressful for me, and I totally feel your pain!
We did three days of no pants (can't leave the house) and DS was potty trained. We used the book "the three day potty training method" and bought a potty watch. As long as you can catch your DC right before an accident and get them on the potty you are pretty much set after 2 or 3 poops.

Poop was the hardest part of potty training for both of my boys. They both suffer with constipation problems, so that is probably part of it. With my older DS I had to sit and read a book to him while he pooped. That helped him relax and helped to keep him on the potty long enough to poop. With Ollie I had a "poopoo prize bag" and that worked really well with him. He will still wait until the last minute to go poop sometimes though. He has to run to the potty because he gets too busy playing and forgets to stop. haha
I'm in the same boat. My DS has no issues until he's in underwear and then he seemingly forgets how to poop in the potty. He's fine if he's naked though. So frustrating.
PLEASE! I beg you, do NOT try to force him to go in the toilet if he isn't ready. I know I may sound over the top but DS1 (8.5) still has to take Miralax everyday so he will go, bc he held it so long when he was PT'ing it stretched his colon. It's taken a long time to get it shrunk back down, but we've also had a second constipation episode when he was 7. He was having bladder spasms bc he was completely impacted again.
All that to say: I know it sounds crazy to put him back in a diaper (we are PT'ing my 2yo DD) but trust me it is better for him to GO and go in a diaper than for you to have to hold him down screaming on the toilet so he will let it come out. :-(
We just finished potty training "boot camp" and DS has been using the potty with only a few accident for a week and a half. Our keys were finding the right candy for rewards and a BIG reward for when he is accident free for one week. He candy of choice is starbursts and he gets one for pee, two for poop and when he is a "BIG BOY" and no more accidents he gets a skate board. He has been asking for one forever and we go to try it out at the store, look at all the colors, and talk about it all the time. And we count down the days until he gets his skateboard. What also helped is after a week of being in underwear (with few accidents) he got to pick out a pack of new underwear from the store. And when he poops in his underwear we make a big deal out of how gross or nasty it is... and how much better it would be in the toilet.
The other thing that helped us is my DS has to poop in private. We literally close the door and leave him in there. We tell him to call us when he is done...and lots of praise even if it is a pea sized poop. We also tell him while he is trying and cannot go to at least "toot toot" before he is done. This helps him get the feeling of where he had to push to relieve the pressure. Hope this helps. To make you feel better, in the first week we went through 7 pairs of extra clothes and I lost count of how many underwear I had to soak. But after a week of accidents it just clicked.
I didn't mean your DS was doing that. It's awful to get to that point though. Something that was recommended to us is a high fiber diet, concentrated apple juice, and take them to the toilet 20 minutes after every meal to sit for 5 minutes.
Try setting a timer and rewarding him for staying there until the timer dings. We used to take DS1 every hour for five minutes until he would go. I'm not sure about what rewards, we never went that route. Whatever works!
