A/S Tips, How do I wake my fetus up?

S/O to @BrittNR 's post about today being her A/S and someone posted about not drinking anything too sugary prior because it made baby uncooperative.

My question to you ladies is what do you recommend to a FTM, who isn't feeling movement yet and had a sleepy fetus during her NT scan, to get this nugget up and moving for her A/S tomorrow?

Re: A/S Tips, How do I wake my fetus up?

  • Chances are LO is moving A LOT, and you just can't feel it. I will be 21 weeks tomorrow, and still haven't felt anything, but when I went for my A/S on Friday, you could see that she was moving around like crazy!

  • I've always heard that drinking something sugary or caffeinated 30 minutes prior to an u/s should wake baby up, but haven't tried that myself.

At my a/s a couple of weeks ago LO was being uncooperative and the tech had me change positions, get up and move around, etc in hopes we could get LO to move into a good position for heart measurements. It didn't work, so I go back tomorrow!

  • Lol...I was awful and ate a donut this morning before mine and my girl was nice and wiggly! They were able to see everything though..just kinda had to catch her!

  • I was advised not to drink anything sugary before the appointment, and my baby was moving around just fine. I'm glad I decided against it.

What I did do was drink a couple of big glasses of water and took a small walk about 45 mins before the appointment. It must have done the trick, because baby was moving around and the scan went perfectly.

  • I only feel movement one in a great while. My AS was at 10 am I just made sure I agree breakfast before hand. I felt nothing all morning or for a day before. I found out basically as soon as she started that my placenta was anterior and many was moving the entire time. Not crazy movements (although it did flip once during the scan)but it was moving and she was able to get all of her measurements. She did take a break and had me walk around so the baby would turn cause there was one last view of the heart she needed. But she commented that basically it's baby's decision if it's going to cooperate.

    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • I know my LO responds to lemonade in an excited way (and grapefruit - not the juice, the fruit for whatever reason.) The doc had my sister drink some apple juice at one of her ultrasounds to get my niece to wake up. It worked!

Good luck! I'm sure baby is up and about and you'll be feeling it in no time!
  • My OB says that's a myth, but I still drank some juice and ate a doughnut before our ultrasound. LO was pretty active, but not so much that they couldn't get the measurements.

  • With my first, baby was sleeping, so they sent me out to have some OJ and then had me come back 30 minutes later. That worked for me. This time around, I had water and a walk [like someone else mentioned], and it worked for a bit, but then baby got tired of being poked at and curled up in a ball. :)

Good luck at your a/s! I say just have a donut. :)

    I like this advice!

I'm the one that posted in the other post.  I had my scan at 1:00pm so maybe it was just the time of day?  My other A/S's have been in the evening and I never had an uncooperative baby before.  I know I won't be drinking OJ before the next scan LOL

I think you could bring a sugary drink with you; like PP said, she drank apple juice.  In case baby is sleepy you could take a few sips, and wake him/her up.

  • I am a FTM as well, and I have been feeling movement, but baby was really active during my a/s and I couldn't even feel most of it. I just ate a normal breakfast before I went.

  • I drank a small (and I mean SMALL, probably about 4 oz) of OJ a half hour before. LO was nice and wiggly and the scan went awesome :)

My OB suggests a glass of OJ 30 minutes before and lots of water leading up to it. I have mine on Wednesday, so let us know if the donut works - I'd much rather go that route! ;)

    Mmm, donuts... ;)

  • I had a bottle of orange juice from Dunkin Donuts before mine... and honestly it was probably too much sugar.  Baby girl was moving around like crazy.  we did get all the measurements that we needed, but it took quite a long time to get them since she wouldn't stay still.  So i would suggest the OJ, but maybe keep it around an 8 oz glass.

  • With my first DD, she was "sleepy" at the scan and the tech just had me drink a glass of really cold water & dance around a bit (very awkward and silly) and DD woke up.

  • I've heard OJ is good. I had a double mocha and a chocolate cake donut (don't judge!) and this little girl still slept through the ENTIRE thing. Sooooo good luck! :)

  • I drank a 12 ounce pumpkin spice latte about 30 minutes prior.  My tech said that my baby was the most cooperative she had had in a long time.  Moved when she needed to and pretty much sat still for pictures as needed.  She was able to get all the measurements she needed within 30 minutes.

  • I agree with PPs about the very cold water. I had my normal mug of half caf/half decaf coffee, an egg on an English muffin about an hour before the scan. I brought a bottle of ice water with me and drank that about 30 mins prior. LO was sleepy at first (it was 7:30am after all) but woke up and was moving around a lot after the tech gave him a few pokes.
