Kidney Stones

Hello all,

I'm 12 weeks pregnant and just found out over the weekend that I may have kidney stones.  Has anyone else had these while pregnant?  The ER did an ultrasound and the baby looks great, but it would ease my mind to hear from someone else who has had these during pregnancy.  I'm still waiting to hear back from my OB about next steps.  Thanks!

Re: Kidney Stones

  • Yes, I had them with my last pregnancy.  I delivered a perfectly healthy, full-term baby.  Unfortunately, I don't have anything else reassuring to tell you about kidney stones during pregnancy, because they hurt like holy hell and gave me lots of trouble during my pregnancy.  Oh, except for this--kidney stones really do hurt worse than childbirth, so if you made it through kidney stones, labor and delivery will be a piece of cake:).

I have a LOT of reasearch, experience, and info that I'm happy to share with you, and I'd be glad to answer any specific questions you have.  Email me: coribecca at hotmail dot com.

  • I'm in the same boat you are, however I had my kidney stones well before I became pregnant. My urologist told me that if I have a flare up while I'm pregnant basically there isn't much he can do since they are limited on the types of medicine they can give you. Hopefully you will be lucky and one won't decide to move while you're pregnant. So far, I haven't had any more flare-ups, so keep your fingers crossed. Smile
  • Thanks to you both.  I haven't seen a urologist yet, and the ER doctors couldn't tell me for sure that my pain is in fact caused by kidney stones because they couldn't give me a CT scan because of the baby, but that the description of the pain, the pain-induced vomiting, and the blood in my urine all pointed to stones.  They've put me on antibiotics, Zofran for nausea, and percocet for pain.  Since this started on Friday, I've had about 6 "attacks" of pain.  I just wondered how long this might go on for.  When I'm not mid-attack, I feel pretty good.  Looking forward to getting my OB's take on all of this.

  • I know it's not fun. This may be TMI, but oh well. When I finally passed my stone...it was like the biggest relief known to man after being miserable for 5 days. Okay so I have to ask, are you straining your urine every time you go to the bathroom? I know its sick, but thats going to be the easiest way to see if it is a stone or not. I was amazed that such a tiny (mine was 3mm) stone could cause soooo much pain.
  • No, I haven't been straining my urine.  I figured with as much as I'm peeing since being pregnant, using a strainer each time would not be practical.  Is it normal that I'm feeling relief and relatively normal between attacks?
  • The only time I personally really hurt was when the stone was trying to move. When that happened, I was doubling over in pain and getting sick. If it wasn't moving, I was sleeping because I was so exhausted from the whole ordeal.
  • I was hospitalized with kidney stones at 30weeks during my last pregnancy. I had never had them before in my life. Man did they hurt! And yes, as pp mentioned, kidney stones are 10 times worse than childbirth. So if you can make it through the stones, childbirth will be a breeze! I hope you get some relief soon!
