Has anyone else watched "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant??"

I'm working from home today and had the tv on in the background and on came "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant." Now some of these women said that the pregnancy symptoms they had were masked by side effects of other previously diagnosed, serious medical conditions. BUT one woman came on, had been going tanning, noticed she had gained some weight, etc. and ended up giving birth....in her toilet.

For the past 4 months, I have been stressed out about making sure I do everything right, eat well, exercise carefully, and was also worried about potential complications from my planned (and medically necessary) c-section. BUT after hearing these stories, and seeing the babies turn out ok, I gotta say, I feel SO much better. I mean, anything I would do would be exponentially better than these chicks. I'm golden. Good job me, for taking care of business.

So if you're ever stressed out and want to feel good about the choices you are making and your pregnancy, check out this show. You will be horrified but end up feeling amazing about yourself LOL

  • I agree, it totally baffles me that someone could have a full term pregnancy and not know.  I'm sure it's possible, I just can't fathom HOW!!!  Both times I've been pregnant, I've had an inkling I was pregnant within 5-6 weeks of conception.  Now, we were trying to get preggo so that's different right there.  But your body changes SO much in the 1st tri, not to mention the huge bump to come!!!  I agree, definitely makes you feel GREAT about the choices you're making for you and your LO!

  • I was thinking the same thing when I was watching it!! Even with additional medical issues, how can these women NOT NOTICE all of the differences in their body?? I mean, I won't list the litany of things that have changed for me but it's insane (ok, I'll mention one: I am astounded by the size of my nipples. Like.... I have no words)  As a FTM, I feel like my body has been taken over my aliens. How these changes go unnoticed is crazy but damn it makes me feel good to watch and know that I am being way too hard on myself sometimes lol

  • yes, I love this show!  It got me through the long naps Chloe took when I just couldn't fall asleep before I went back to work.  She was not the only one to have the baby on the toilet

  • That show is ridiculous! After everything that has been happening to my body in the past 5 months, it's hard to believe that those people are real!

2 women that stick in my mind from that show: One was 54, they had tried unsuccessfully at IVF 3 times, went for a 4th and last time, and assume it didn't stick, that she was going through menopause, and that was it. I agree, at some point, you feel the baby move, but I think there was some other medical condition that prevented her from feeling movement.

The other had a nerve condition, so she could only feel below her ribs about 40% of the time. She was on the pill, assumed she wouldn't get pregnant, etc. I think she thought she might be pregnant at some point, so quit taking the pill maybe (sorry, this was a really long time ago when I watched it). She finally figured it out at like 8 months, felt some movement once, went to the dr ASAP to figure out what it was. The baby turned out OK.

ETA: If you don't have kids by 50, why would you still try?

DENIAL!  I don't get it either.  I could see not knowing for a few months, but the whole time?  I don't buy a single story from a woman who all of a sudden has a baby and says they had no clue what was going on.

I've only seen a few episodes. I know people have crazy irregular periods, but to go nine months or so without a period...come on! Like a PP said, I would honestly think I was dying of something if I didn't know I was pregnant and I had all the symptoms I had/have. Especially the morning sickness! Crazy

  • Ok, so I actually personally know someone that has been through this.  She had no symptoms, gained only 5-10 lbs, never felt movement and never showed (Baby literally was so far back she had no clue).  We would go out all the time and she couldnt understand why on earth she was always tired....her Dr. said she was anemic and put her on iron, never once thought to do a pg test on her.  So long story short, she and another friend of ours were headed to the mall to buy shoes for some big event and when she got in the car she said "lets make this quick I really dont feel good"  They get to the mall parking lot and she is doubled over in pain and asked her friend to take her to the hospital....they took her back and came out 10 mins later asking our friend to start making phone calls to the potential dad and she literally laughed out loud cause she thought the nurse was joking.  Well no joke 4 hours later little Rorrie came into the world and no one had a clue she existed until that moment......Its still the story of the group, we all tease her about not knowing and she has been teasing me cause I am huge...ugh!!

I agree that its crazy that people dont know, but its so weird how it happens!

  • My mom didnt know she was pregnant with me until 5-6 months. She started to feel me move. In her defense she didn't have regular periods and was peri menopausal.

  • i had spotting all through this pregnancy - and it was always at it worse at 4wks,8wks,12wks and 18wks...so if you are someone who has irregular periods i think it could happen. Also, not everyone has a bump. I knew one lady who was very tall and no one knew she was pregnant (i worked with her) until we were told she went on mat leave.

  • Cyndilou I love that you know someone that this happened to... everytime I watch that show I think  wow...  but that said if I hadn't taken a pregnancy test and I had irregular periods so far I could easily dismiss everything I've had so far as flu like... complications from my cushings...  I have an anterior placenta and so i don't feel much by way of kicking and no one at work has guessed I'm pregnant (although my boss and his EA know).

  • Some of these women actually took pregnancy tests and they came out negative. So i can see why they might of thought there symptoms were due to something else.

A niece of a close friend of mine had this happen to her. She was average weight before pregnancy and gained about 10 lbs but thought she was just gaining weight. No one in their very close knit family suspected anything. She had no other symptoms until her ankles and feet started swelling up like crazy. The doctor took one look at her and said "either you're in liver failure or you're pregnant". Did a pregnancy test and it was positive. The doctor totally guesstimated she might be as far as 5 months along and scheduled an u/s for the next day. The ultrasound showed a full term, 37 week baby who was curled up way up high under her ribs. Un-freaking-believable.

She gave birth a couple weeks later to a healthy baby girl despite no prenatal care. We still refer to her baby as "surprise baby" even though she's almost 3 years old now :)

Eta: she actually DID have what she thought was a period a few times.  Her periods had always been irregular/light so she apparently she didn't keep track very closely? The whole story boggles my mind and if I wasn't so close to this girl's aunt I'm not sure I'd believe it.

  • I worked with a girl who his her pregnancy all 9 months from us and her parents (who she lived with) she didn't show, though was probably 20# overweight at the time, and we had no idea until she called in one day saying she would be off for a while because she had a baby. I don't know if SHE actually knew, but its crazy to me if you don't.

  • I met a lady once who had this happen to her.  In her case she found out at 32 weeks and gave birth just a couple weeks later because of pre-eclampsia but still.  She had been told her whole life that she would never have a baby.  They had just adopted a newborn so she was tired anyway and she actually was going to the doctor because she felt something was wrong.  They tested her for a ton of stuff but the doctor never once did a pregnancy test because of this woman's previous medical history.  When she went for an ultrasound on her kidneys is when they found baby - measuring at 32 weeks.  Because of the adoption she now has 2 kids 5 months apart.

  • I love the Liz Lemon gif!
  • After reading the title of the show - I couldn't watch it.

I have no patience for stupid people and the fact that they can make an entire show (as opposed to just a one-hour special) out of this drives me crazy.
  • DH and I were just talking about this at lunch. I am quite tall and not showing unless I wear fitted clothes. Now I would still think I would have figured out I was preggers if we weren't ttc. I couldn't imagine not knowing the entire 9months, do they not feel the baby move?!?

Wow that is amazing!! I see a movie being made soon!
  • My friend had a friend (I know, sounds fishy, but I trust this friend of mine). Her "party trick" was that she was pregnant, but would get a negative on any pregnancy pee test. Even at 9 months. She was obviously pregnant, they had been trying, she knew she was after going to the doctor and having an u/s. I think that the blood test only showed her as barely pregnant.

Weird. All of it. My body just goes DUH! YOU'RE PREGNANT!!!!!

  • LOL, I watch that show too and every time I am SHOCKED. How do those babies end up normal after their mothers did nothing for pre-natal care? Blows my mind but makes me feel at ease knowing I am doing everything I can to have a healthy baby.

TBH, I totally thought this would be me one day. Between a slow metabolism, PCOS, endometriosis, it wasn't uncommon for me to go without AF. Before going on BC, I actually didn't have AF for almost 2 years straight. (No one thought to diagnose me with PCOS. My old obgyn just basically told me to deal with the horrible cramps yet no AF.)

If we weren't actively trying, I probably wouldn't have tested for a few months and not known.

  • I love this show! Before I was trying to get pregnant, I'd always tell people I hoped I was pregnant and just didn't know it. So if I had a stomach ache or something I'd joke around and say I'm in labor and we'd think of funny names for my episode. They always have crazy ones like "Baby is my Shoe" or "Is That a Baby in your Pants?"
