Direct Sales

I got approached by my cousin ("propositioned," but DH says that sounds weird) to be part of her direct sales pyramid scheme. I'm a working mom, and it would be nice to stay home with DS, but sales is just not for me. I told her that, but she still gave me an info packet and some samples.

What is the etiquette for this? Just take it to be polite? Or insist on not taking it because I know I'm not interested? I feel like I'm not leading her on because I did tell her that I'm not comfortable doing sales, but oh well.

Re: Direct Sales

  • I actually DO direct sales and the legitimate ones aren't pyramid schemes. But that's neither here nor there because that wasn't your question! :-)

I would tell her you don't feel comfortable taking it since you're not interested. You'd rather her save her business supplies for someone who IS interested.

Just out of curiosity, which company was it? :)

@ILoveBoys - It's Advocare - I do actually think they have good products. Maybe "pyramid scheme" is not true for it because I don't really know their business model. My cousin loves her job and the products.

  • @Maebb - I've heard of them, but don't know much about how they work, like you said.
At any rate, if you're not interested, I wouldn't take any information. She might then keep asking you if you've read it, what did you think, etc.

  • I would just say seriously that I am not interested and that I don't want her to waste her materials on me. I absolutely wouldn't take it.

  • Yeah, I would return the samples and packet. If you're a good fibber, just say "I thought about it, and it's just not right for me. Good luck!"

  • Not a fan of that. It's really hard when it's friends or family too. They can get pushy. At least in my experience. I just always tell them I'm not interested and I don't have time (which isn't usually the best answer because they rebuttal with but you're working for yourself! You can have all the time you want!!) to invest into it. I don't take samples or packets and if they don't stop emailing/texting/Facebooking me about it I just ignore them. Or start blocking them.

  • Advocate has actually been around for a while, it just seems to be growing in popularity. I used it back in 2001, with great success. That being said, it seems like everyone and their brother is selling it now. Though I would love the extra money, I'm like you and direct sales make me a little skittish. I would just politely tell her that you don't think it's for you, but will definitely send anyone who is interested her information. That is what I have done with several friends and family members who have tried to rope me in. It seems to work.
  • I had to look this product line up because I am nosey. I am curious what is so special about it. It's pricey and there are tons of these products in many stores for considerably less. Does Drew Brees' face on the box make my body absorb the supplements better?
