So recently DH's car insurance ran out and we haven't had the money to redo it yet. And wouldn't you know it, as soon as I DO have the money and planned to get it back in the next couple of days, we got pulled over. :- / They impounded the car and we can't do a thing until after the long weekend. So much for the money I'd planned to use to finish shopping for baby things.
Just feeling frustrated b/c as soon as we tart to catch up/get ahead something happens to set us back.
(No hate for driving w/o the insurance okay? We just didn't have the money but have to go to work you know?)

  • Sometimes if you fix the issue (no insurance, expired tag/license, etc) the cop will throw away the ticket. That won't help with the impound but might help on not paying the ticket?

  • He said that might be the case, I really hope so.

  • As they say, when it rains, it pours. I'm sorry that happened to you - and no hating on driving without insurance, but that is a little dangerous, and there is always a chance of being pulled over like happened. Does your city not have public transportation you can take? I've had an accidental lapse in coverage before and had to rely on biking / taking the bus everywhere I needed to go, bc I was so paranoid about being pulled over.

I do know getting your car out of impound is really expensive, so I'm hoping it doesn't drain all of your baby funds. I hope this weekend gets a little better for you and your DH.

  • It would be a lot more expensive if you had gotten in an accident and god forbid hurt yourselves or someone else without insurance. I'd be thankful I was just pulled over if I were you!! You saved a bunch of money!
  • When you do go to get insurance look into payment plans for it instead of paying all at once. Then it might be be as big of an issue because you are paying smaller amounts more often. I did that and my car insurance when it was only for one car was less than 50$ every 2.5 months or whatever the cycle was. Also look into multiple companies plans and see if switching to a different company is cheaper.

Be glad that you were just pulled over and not in an accident that was your fault. That would definitely drain your baby fund and you would have a broken car and possibly injuries for you or the other driver involved.

  • This happened to me once, except I went a whole year without insurance (!!!). My parents apparently dropped me from their insurance without telling me, thus I had no idea. I was in college and not working but they apparently felt I could pay my own insurance and forgot to tell me. I got pulled over and my tags taken. In hindsight, I was lucky I had no accidents in that time period and happily went the 30 days with no car (borrowed a friend's car). I wasn't able to get the ticket dropped since it was such a serious lapse.

Definitely a sucky situation but lesson learned :) I now pay my insurance before all other bills.

Good luck to you guys and hope everything works out for the best!
