3rd Trimester

fat fingers

I'm swelling up like a toad! I mean, not like an alarming rate but my wedding rings no longer fit and I don't know what to do.  I am SUPER allergic to nickel so just getting a regular old necklace to wear won't do me any good (to put the rings on).  I was thinking about getting a fake wedding band that I found online that promises to be nickel free, but my husband pointed out that I might swell more. Is that even possible? I'm at 30 weeks and I can't imagine my fingers getting fatter! - I've checked with the doctor and she said it's a normal level of swelling btw - so what do I do? Should I splurge and get a necklace chain I know I won't be allergic to (which means platinum) or do I get a cute but cheap ring and hope I won't react to it? I have also tried coating my necklaces with spray paint, clear nail polish and whatever they offer at the jewelry store and it never works.  I always get a rash.  What do you ladies suggest?

  • Just don't wear them. I stopped wearing mine several weeks ago.

  • Don't wear anything. It's not that big of a deal. What are you so worried about? No one is going to think you suddenly got a divorce or separated or whatever. I haven't worn a wedding ring in weeks and I don't plan on putting on any jewelry at this point b/c I'm afraid if I wear it to the delivery I will never see it again.
  • During my 1st pregnancy I had to remove my rings at like 20 weeks!  With this one I'm 35 weeks and still wearing them.  I did get them upped a size about 3 months post partum because I wanted to wear them for the holidays.  If I were you I would probably just get a temporary ring.  Especially if you're planning to have multiple pregnancies, it will be worth it.  Most likely you will swell more, so don't get it too tight.

  • Yep, I got a beautiful engagement ring a couple months ago that I was able to wear all of 2 weeks before my finger was too fat to keep forcing it on. Seriously, don't worry about it and just stop wearing it. And yes, they can certainly swell more, you have 10 more weeks still!
  • I stopped wearing mine around 30 weeks.  Put them on for my shower and maternity pictures and struggled to get them back off both times.  I didn't see the point buying a chain or different ring to wear for 10 weeks or less.  And I could care less if people look at me differently because I'm not wearing a wedding ring.

  • Ya it's not a big deal. You are for sure going to swell more so save your money and rock a naked left hand. Every other pregnant woman in their 3rd tri is doing the same thing.

  • I'd be more worried about the chain breaking an losing them. Just leave them at home. I'm sure that your husband will understand.

  • Well if it makes you feel any better I'm 36 weeks and mine are stuck on. Ugh. I hope I don't have to get them cut off. I kept saying "I'll take them off this weekend" and two/three weekends passed and here I am with rings that won't come off. Yeesh. Hubs is going to work at it in a couple days and see if we can have success one last time :-/
  • Another vote for no rings.  The summer here was so hot and humid, I stopped wearing my wedding rings around 17 weeks.  I do have a $15 cheap-o ring that I wear most days, but I often forget it (it's a little big now, so hopefully it will last me to the end of pregnancy).

I miss my rings a lot, but honestly I just don't care if anyone looks at me funny for being pregnant with no rings - I know plenty of people who have to take them off.
  • I stopped wearing my rings long ago. It's not that big of a deal to me. I never even considered purchasing and wearing a fake ring. I would much rather put the funds towards diapers or something more useful than a temporary ring.

  • I haven't worn my ring for at least a month now and its not that big of a deal.  I told my fiance the day I took it off and we both moved on.
