I get mixed messages though--some people say those are all pronounced the same (or very close). I had a friend vehemently disagree and say anything but the 'y' is /LINE/.

Madeleine. Madelyn is a misspelling and Madeline has a LINE ending, not lynn.
I don't agree. It's like Carolyn and Caroline. Two completely different names.
I don't understand what you're saying. Madeleine and Madelyn have the same pronunciation (lynn ending) and Madeline is different (line ending). Madelyn exists because it is a misspelling of Madeleine, being spelled more phonetically. All of these names derive from Magdalene, anyway.
I was just saying that Madelyn and Madeline are two completely different (and yet both valid) names, so it depends in what the OP wants. At least, that's my take on it.
I forgot to add that they're pronounced differently. -lynn vs -line

That's why I was saying. Madeleine and Madeline are different too.
