High-Risk Pregnancy

just got diagnosed with GD

So I failed my 1 hour and now I found my 3 hour. All 3 were abnormal and high numbers. I'm crushed. I didn't have it with my first born and I don't know why now. I'm feeling really overwhelmed as I am already dealing with some short cervix issues and chronic neck pain. I hope everything will be ok and I'm not sure how I am gonna change my diet. It's gonna be so hard. I can't have a drink or a cig if I want and now I can't have a cookie or a donut. Any advice....encouragement. Please

Re: just got diagnosed with GD

  • You can have a cookie or donut... but in moderation. I thought it was the end of the world when I found out at 20 weeks. I'm 33 weeks now and it has become 2nd nature now.

  • How did you find out at 20 weeks? I'm 29 weeks and I hope it's not too late. I hope and pray my baby will be okay. I'm not even sure what all of this means.
  • I felt that way at first too. But once I actually saw what the "diet" plan was and started doing it I felt so much better. It's really about portions. You CAN have the cookie or donut. Just not 3 donuts. You can totally do this. And, truthfully, once I started eating better more balanced food I felt physically better as well.

  • It's hard at first but, you will get it. Go in with an open mind. I've had it since 28 weeks and I use diet and insulin to regulate my GD. It will be over before you know it.  Just keep in mind it's not an EXACT science, it's about moderation. I'm sure you and LO will come out of this healthy and happy. (Not to mention this board is awesome and very supportive.Sorry you have to be here but, Welcome!)

  • Thank you all for your support and encouragement!!!
  • I just found out today too that I have GD. I failed 2 of the 4 blood draws. The second and third, I think. It's not a total surprise for me. My twin sister had it with her second pregnancy too. This is my second pregnancy. I passed my test last pregnancy, but looking back I think I developed GD later. I swear Doctors should check it once a month!

I'm sorry this is overwhelming. It will be a huge change for a little while. Luckily there is support and specialists than can help us through it!

  • I'm in the same boat as well. Found out today that I failed two of the four
blood draws in the three hour test. I'm also feeling very overwhelmed and have been appreciating the supportive posts I've come across in this thread and others. I'm starting to feel a little better and I know that I will do it for the health of my LO.
We can all get through it - it's just going to be a big adjustment for a while!

  • Hello everybody, I'm new to this board. I just found out today that I have GD. I am overwhelmed, sad, angry and scared. The thought of poking myself with a needle multiple times a day is terrifying to me. Does anyone one know of a monitor that is not too painful? As far as diet, I see it as being in a prison. I don't eat 6 times a day as it is and living on a strict diet seems extremely hard and scary. I wish I could just get my blood checked in the lab every week or so. This has really turned my world upside down and makes me sad that the last months of my pregnancy will be unenjoyable. Thanks for listening.

  • Hang in there.  I was crushed too  but some things are just out of our control.  It's not your fault, you will be overwhelmed with information and medical appointments but it's for the baby and you will benefit as well.  I HATE needles.  At our practice the nurse had me in a bit of a hold and did my first needle poke  for me because I couldn't and I was like OH!!!  but it wasn't as bad as I thought.  I think the most frustrating thing for me was working out the meal plan and eating exactly as they told me to but my numbers were still off mainly due to sleeping at night when I wasn't eating and had to be put on medicine to help my body out. And have the dose upped a few times.  Or that my insurance would only give me so many strips and I had to go refill every 12 days.   Do your best and you'll be surprised at how friends and family may join in supporting you by trying to alter the way they eat when around you or if you have special meals together.  .
  • I was crushed too!  I was diagnosed last week.  First the dr called to tell me I passed on Thursday, and then they called me back on Monday to tell me "nope you actually failed... the lab made a mistake..."  I was really really angry.  Between all the regular pains of third trimester and then to add this??!! NOT FAIR!  I basically went through the stages of grief.  I took a full day to be miserable and angry at the world.  The next day I woke up and figured "well it is what it is, and I have to move forward".  My brother has actually been the most motivating.  He keeps telling me pregnancy and childbirth are a marathon, and this is just part of the training.

I have been on my diet for about a week now and it seems to be going really well.  I will say it's tough sticking to the schedule of eating, but the diet is flexible.  You will learn what you can and can't eat.  I can dessert every night, I just wait 2 hours after dinner.  And I eat it in moderation. Since starting the diet, my heartburn has gotten so much better!!  I also started walking every day and doing yoga 3 x's a week.  I feel worlds better from the exercise.  You can do this!!  We all can!
