High hcg but no fetus?

Any thoughts on my situation? I went for my first ultrasound on Thursday- was supposed to be 7 weeks 2 days. Only thing that showed up on ultrasound was a gestational sac. My doctor thinks it could be a eptopic pregnancy, or my dates are off, because I was having very irregular periods and it is too early to see anything yet. However, my hcg level was taken and was over 17000 on Thursday and when I went back Sunday it was over 33000, so practically double. How could nothing have shown up with hcg levels being so high? I go back Thursday for second ultrasound but wanted to hear if you all had any thoughts. My BFP was august 9, lmp July 2. thanks!

Think positive thoughts. Maybe your dates are just off. Seems likely with your irregular cycles. Sending prayers your way!

I dont want to scare you but this happened with my last pregnancy and it ended up being a blighted ovum. I truly hope this isn't the case for you and that you get answers soon.

Did he say where the gestational sac was...if it was in the uterus or somewhere else? I don't know why he would be worried about an ectopic if the gs was in the uterus. Could be very possible your dates are off. My dates were off more than 2 weeks due to irregular cycles. I was 5 weeks when I thought I was 7. Good luck. I hope you get answers soon.

I have also thought it could be a blighted ovum, but my doc never mentioned that as a possibility. The sac was in the uterus so I am really hoping it is not ectopic.
