Cloth Diapering

Stinky Diaper Help!

I need help with stinky diapers. I am currently using OsoCozy and Thirsties AIOs.
My problem is when I can't hang dry them, and stick them in the dryer to dry, they still stink like pee and poo. And then they of course stink up the dryer.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong or how to fix this.
I prewash in cold/cold water with some oxiclean and vinegar. Then I wash in hot/cold water with an extra rinse cycle on with some unscented Ecos detergent, oxiclean, borax. I am making sure there is enough water in the washing machine and that I am using the proper amount of detergent, but my diapers are still smelling. :(

Help! What would you suggest?

Re: Stinky Diaper Help!

  • What kind of water do you have? Vinegar can exacerbate stink issues.

I've never used borax or oxiclean on my diapers so I don't know much about their efficacy. Why do you use both?

I would try a full wash cycle with no detergent first to really rinse your diapers. Then follow with your regular wash cycle and extra rinse.

    Hope that helps. Good luck!

  • We just have well water. And thanks for the tip on vinegar, I'll try without next time and see if that helps.

  • Yikes! Well water is super hard. Definitely skip the vinegar. Is the borax acting as a water softener?

We have super hard city water. I just posted my routine in a hard water thread but here it is again.

Speed wash cycle (approx 20 mins): warm or cold to combat staining (no detergent, just calgon/water softener agent)

Repeat speed wash cycle: warm or cold and no spin (no detergent, just water softener)

Regular cycle (hot wash/cold rinse) with Tide and two extra rinses (just to be sure all the soap is out).

I do have a stain cycle on my machine (hot wash and cold rinse) but it is a very long cycle so I only use it when absolutely necessary.

This pretty much solved my stink issues. I know some frown on Tide but I used BG, Ruby Moon, etc and they just couldn't cut it with our super hard water. Good luck!

  • what pp said: rinse cycle, no detergent.  Hot/cold wash with detergent. How much are you using now? If the dipes stink, add more 1tbs at a time until you get it right.  Then extra rinse

Yes, the borax is to help combat the hard water. Thanks for the tips. I'll try them out and see if it helps.

  • I have hard well water and this is my routine: warm rinse, hot wash with ecos f&c detergent and some calgon, extra cold rinse. I usually use the detergent almost to the 2 line and never see bubbles in my extra rinse cycle, but do it anyways. How much detergent do you use?

ETA I have an old top loading washing machine.

That's how much I use too. I also have an old top loader.
