At the park today there was a little girl DD was playing with. She was 5.5 DD is almost 4.5. DD has Asperger's. she is unusually social but misses things. Her eye contact isn't great, she lectures rather than talks, speaks in a monotone voice with little emotion etc. she was having a blast playing with this little girl and the girl seemed to be enjoying playing with DD. After about 20 minutes I hear the girl tell DD to stop following her, DD copies a lot that is how she plays. Then little girl tells DD she is gong to beat her up and why won't she just die. Maybe it's that awful letter, whatever I was pissed. I went up to the mom after I separated the girls. I had years in my eyes and told her how hard it is to teach your kid social niceties. How it breaks your heart to teach your kid how to say hi my name is Olivia do you want to play and because kids sense something is off they are so mean. Seriously wtf are parents teaching their kids when I spend a year teaching my kid to say hi my name is Olivia and so far we have gotten a lot of hi Olivia are you retarded back? From 5 year olds! Wtf are parents doing? So I told this mom how maybe teaching her daughter empathy and caring for others would be a good idea. How awful her daughter was for picking up on the little differences with my sweet girl and making fun of her. Then I notice the mom herself has deformities and hearing aides. When she talks her speech makes it obvious she is mostly deaf. She starts sobbing how they have so many issues with their daughter, of course they teach her tolerance due to her own disabilities etc. she grabbed her daughter and spanked her and dragged the sobbing kid home. Ugh, now I feel bad.

Yeah, I'm just writing off today lol! One of those days. I hope she's not overly hard on the kid because I get it, kids pick on other kids. It seemed especially mean spirited but maybe the kid has issues due to her moms disabilities.

I can see why you felt bad, but seriously...she told your DD she was going to beat her up and that she should die. That isn't normal behavior for a child of 5 or any other age. I would be shocked and then completely livid if I heard a kid say such a thing to one of my children.

I think I just am tired of it. Maybe it was that nasty letter that went around. So many kids are saying really awful things, not just this little girl. I do wonder if our generation, the me generation, are raising future serial killers lol! So many kids have said things like I am going to murder you, I will kill you, one little boy told my DD he would cut her with a knife, just because she is different. She is not aggressive, mostly plays by herself at the playground. To go up to a kid because she is quietly reading at the playground and say you are going to cut her with a knife? Some serious parenting deficits going on there. It just seems to happen more and more now. Usually the mom is just indifferent to it. That is what gets to me.

To me it has nothing to do with spanking. Mostly I wonder if we all have this idea that our kids are so perfect they couldn't possibly be in the wrong. Or we do get so defensive about our parenting we don't stop to think, hey, have I really taught my child empathy? It's a hard thing to teach, especially to a child like my DD but I try really hard. But I'm guilty too of doing what I accuse other parents of doing. DH and. I have said in front of DD not to worry about the kids bugging her because they will be bagging her groceries in the future. We freely talk about how her iq and giftedness makes her better than the kids that tease her. I know we shouldn't but we do. It's a vicious circle.

I am crying for both of you. Obviously you know what you could have said differently. I can't imagine the kind of stuff you have to deal with...I'm sorry people are so heartless. Reading things like this reminds me just how important it is to actively model teach my children tolerance, kindness, compassion and empathy. Again, I'm sorry this happened.
