Nursery to Big girl room

Five Months to Plan

So I have been delaying changing DD's room because we were trying to sell our house and we were TTC. As I posted a could weeks ago things have changed. TTC and selling the house are on hold for probably at least 18 months or more. I now want to change her room. It is still decorated with Jungle Animals. She is in her crib converted to a toddler bed with rail, and we really do not have room to put the daybed we have (stored at my parents) in her room. I have a budget less than $100 for everything. At a minimum I see needing: new border, decals, sheets, pillow case, blanket, hamper, clock and a small amount of material. (These are the items that are all themed Jungle in her room.)

Now the debate. Do I even need to change it? I am just over the baby stuff. (DH does not think it needs changed but is ok with me doing it if he does not have to help. LOL)

Anything that is twin does not work. So I am stuck with crib/toddler bed themes.

I was thinking butterflies, but it was suggested princess. DD loves princess, but I try to stay away from character themed room decoration (she has a small of amount of character clothes.) How would you feel about a princess themed room? I know she would love it and it easy to find princess themed stuff, but do I want to go there? Is it really any different than my Rainbow Brite sheets when I was little?

This would only be for probably 18 months - 3 years when we will move and she can redo her room.  

Thoughts? Leave it? Princess?

I don't think you need decals and a border. I like simple clean walls with a nice color, so maybe if your walls are just white I would get a can of paint and add color that way (I think it's the cheaper option as well). 

I don't like character theme rooms either, but I think you could do something girly without getting too themey. Look on Pinterest for girly rooms. I think incorporating tulle would be cute and inexpensive and there's plenty of DIY tulle projects you could do - lampshade, bed skirt, curtains, etc.

As for bedding, you can mix n match and find simple toddler bedding online. It doesn't have to be a set or from a chain store.

I converted DD's winnie the pooh nursery to Princess themed and i think it came out cute. I did it for about $100-$150 bucks. New Toddler Bedding, Lamp, I switched out the shadow boxes and just used stickers and wooden Letters to update them. I also got wall decals at target and walmart and they were reasonable.Most of the other items we had already collected like the blanket with her name on it from the disney store and all the disney princess plush. Lamp and hat box were from the Christmas Tree Store and the Bean Chair came from Walmart. All the Pooh stuff was packed up and will be recycled when the new baby comes in march. DD will get her big-girl room sometime between now and then. Most of the items will follow her. I am not into her having character clothing really either, but I think the princesses will be a hit for a few years so I don't mind it in her room.

I am so creatively challenged and that is even when I really try. If you want a website managed or the brakes changed on your car, I am your girl. But if it involves decorations and crafts, I am not your girl. Every wall in my house is Antique white, my SIL hung my window treatments when I moved in, and one time I tried to help my husband and the lady at the frame shop pick out matting a a frame, I was told it should sit down (nicely by both). This does not mean I do not try but it never turns out the same. LOL. 

I do love the tulle bed skirt though and that valance is amazing. I might have to try! Maybe I can get some help.

That looks pretty. I think when I think princesses, I think overkill. I have never seen to done tastefully. I think you did it though, that is really nice.

i agree with all of this.  i dont have a girl, but i am definitely not into character anything.  especially all over a room. books or video, ok..but clothing or decor? no.  the only way i would ever do it at all is if the child is old enough to really know, and ask for it (without me asking them first).  even then, it would be a minimal addition to the room. i agree with a new can of paint and separate linens.  doesnt need to be matchy-matchy.  good luck!!

I think you'll be fine with a princess room. erin did it tastefully and you could even go more minimal with it if you wanted to.

When G gets her big girl room it'll be fairies. Why? I used to collect them and have tons of stuff. Otherwise I'd have picked a color scheme and decorate that way with little girl touches.

I don't like it, but only because the whole princess thing offends me in general. I know it will be impossible to avoid completely, but I don't want my girls to have any exposure to princesses. I am trying to direct them toward stronger role models, and I will be pretty upset if they are ever into them.
