Damn it. Insulin. (question for GD Mamas)

So I finally met with the specialist about my GD and he put me on one shot of insulin at night for my fasting numbers. Boo. I am so not looking forward to this, esp when I have this LO in 31 days. But it means only 31 shots. The first one is the scariest. I'm siting here looking at the pen all freaked out. I do have a question though, due to a house project running late and DH getting home super late, I still haven't had dinner. Should I go ahead and eat after the shot or am I screwing this all up and better to wait to start tomorrow? That was the only question I forgot to ask. I was intending to give myself the shot at 9:30 but then I would be eating within 20 mins. I would call the office if I could.

Re: Damn it. Insulin. (question for GD Mamas)

  • My DH is type 2 diabetic.  He had one shot that bothered him.  It helped him to put something cold on his belly before the shot.  Ice pack or something like that.  That way it was numb before he put the needle in.  Maybe that would help you?  Even mentally knowing it wasn't going to hurt as bad might make the shot easier?   I can't really help on the other thing.  I failed my sugar tests but my GD is diet controlled.

  • It's great after meals, its the fasting that's consistently high. Annoys me because it's the only one I genuinely can't control. Thanks for the tip though!!

  • I'm on insulin three times a day, but haven't been put on it yet for fasting numbers. When did your dr say to take it? I would think you could take it right before bed so you could wait until after your meal.

I'm not sure which type of insulin pen you have, but once you get over the mental thought of injecting yourself, it really isn't bad. I actually think its easier/less painful than the blood test. I do remember the first injection taking me a few minutes to work up to.

  • By the way, you might want to ask this question on the High Risk board. There are a lot of GD mommas over there and they are all very helpful.

  • I would imagine you should do it right b4 bed. Insulin before a meal, Helps with that meal. I'm diet controlled so not on insulin, but I'd find it strange to do it before dinner if its for your fasting number. Might bring your dinner number down to low.

  • The only reason I ask is it's more important that it be at the same time every day so I am not overlapping dose times. If I wait too long tonight that means I need to wait until the same time every night. Tonight is a one off. We never eat this late. I normally eat with DS and DH eats when he gets home from work. I am clearly over thinking this one.

Personally, I would take it before dinner, then just note that on your tracking sheet so if there is a variance with other days, you (and your Doctor) remember why.

  • I understand the dose and the timing. I am on a long acting 22-26 hour insulin for fasting numbers. Yesterday was my first day using it and due to an unexpectedly very late dinner I wasn't sure if I should have waited or not. In the end I took the dose at 11 and will take it a half hour earlier over the next two days, so that I am taking it by 10am without a big overlap between doses. Like I said last night I was very nervous and freaked out by the whole process and was over thinking it.

  • @shakes,it sounds like you are on Lantus. I take it every day twice a day. I'm a rare case that doesn't last 24 hours. When I started, it was once a day at say 5-6 pm. Didn't matter if I had dinner or not.

  • @karamelsutra, levemir actually. So far so good. Fasting was still high so I will dial up one and see what tomorrow mornings numbers are. I only have 3o days until my csection so I am hoping to get this under control asap.
