Hair loss?

Me, not the baby. Is anyone else having this problem? My hair is longer now (shoulder length) than it has been in at least twenty years so maybe I'm just not used to it. Every time I run my fingers through my hair I pull out a few strands. In the shower I'll pull at least 20 while washing my hair. I have super thick hair so it's not noticeable to others but I can tell that I've lost a ton. I tend to wear my hair back in a ponytail every day, could that be cauing this? I'm also EBF'ing so I thought maybe I was losing too many vitamins and started taking a one a day vitamin today. Any suggestions? I'd like to keep growing it. I only have a few more inches to go and then I can cut it and donate it to Locks of Love. I'd hate to cut it now when I'm so close but I'm afraid it's going to get funky looking soon!

Re: Hair loss?

  • It seems like I have been shedding more lately. But I think I remember reading in one of my pregnancy books that this was normal because during pregnancy you don't lose as much hair everyday so after the baby is born you start to shed again so it seems like its more than it actually is.

  • I think it's normal to lose hair as the hormones are leaving your body. I have also heard that you lose less while pregnant and your body makes up for it afterwards. Not sure that's true though. I personally felt like I was shedding while pregnant but it stopped eventually
  • I think it's a hormone thing, but it's started happening to me too. And it seems like growth has slowed down too since DD was born.
  • Ditto the hormonal changes. Also, when your hair is tied/pinned up, the loose hair that would have fallen out throughout the day is still tied up. When you take your hair down and comb through it, all of that hair will shed so it seems like you are losing a ton more at once. Hope that makes sense. However, if you wear your hair up too tight, and often enough, it could be breaking off from the hair tie or pins.

  • I'm in the same boat. I asked my OB at my 6 week appointment and she said whatever wasn't lost during pregnancy is what will be shed now. I have thick hair, so it hopefully won't show, however, I experienced hair loss in high school due to iron issues. All of this combined leaves me feeling like I am going to go bald. I ask my DH if he'll still love me if I am bald and if I go bald will he go bald with me. Being the great DH he is he always replies yes.  :)

I had hairloss due to an auto immune problem several years ago. The hair loss came back the month before I got pregnant, then my hair grew back shortly after becoming pregnant. I thank my baby for giving me my hair back. Losing hair is horrifying. DH of course said he loves me no matter what. :)

  • Oh yes, I'm losing hair like whoa, too. And my hair is really fine so it really sucks. I thought it didn't start until like 3 months or so PP with DD, but DS is 7 weeks and its already coming out. I'm getting my hair cut on Monday and can't freaking wait. It's driving me nuts.

  • It's totally a normal side effect of changing hormones. It sucks because I've always had fine hair and for the first time in my life I had thick luscious hair while I was pregnant. Mine started coming out this week and I'm 8 weeks PP. Now I feel like I'm going bald

  • I have been waiting for this to happen since Iremember from my first 2 how my hair came out in handfuls not long after delivery. I am 2months pp and it has not happened but I am EBF so my OB instructed to continue prenatal vitsmins while BF. So I thought maybe its the vitamin, that is the one thing that is different for me this time around
  • I swear I am going bald with how much hair I am losing. It comes out in clumps and I am finding it everywhere (including in the babies' diapers). I have thick hair so you can't tell on my head, but it's all over my house. I was told it was from hormones after having the babies.
