Babies: 6 - 9 Months

wwyd re:naps

DD is 6.5 months and starting to fallinto a nice nap schedule with 2 naps a day one in the morning and one in the afternoon. They range from 1-2.5 hours.

I have a support group that I go to on Wed. Mornings so I am away from home during her first nap (she comes with) and she usually doesn't sleep or it's maybe 30 minutes broken. By the time we get home she is over tired and I feel like it screws up her afternoon nap and she's a mess for the rest of the day/night. I even feel like her naps are screwed up the next day too

So....my question is whether you would suffer through it for the sake of something that's important to you or stick to the nap routine and stay close to home?

Do you try and stay home during your LO's nap?

Re: wwyd re:naps

  • I've had similar dilemmas. If the group is important to you, then I'd say go. It's only once a week and it's not a bad idea to have your LO being flexible.  DS and I go to a mommy-baby class once a week and it does interfere DS's nap, but I find the class very informative and DS does enjoy it.

Otoh, there are library storytimes that happen during DS's nap times. Those I'm skipping as I do want DS to get his good nap.

I figure DS's nap schedule will probably change in a couple of months, so hopefully we'll be able to go to storytime again.

  • I like to have a couple morning activities for my toddler during the week, so we are away from home about 2 times/week for DD's (7.5 months) morning nap.  She won't sleep anywhere but her crib or carseat, so when at all possible, I will leave extra early so she can get at least 30 minutes straight in the car.  When at all possible I work around things so we can be home, but that was a lot easier when DS was a baby and no older sibling to entertain!   We're always home for afternoon nap.

  • This is probably an obvious question, but is there anyone who could watch her while you're at your group? Or, could you try to maybe adjust her nap schedule every day so it fits a bit better?

There is no one to watch her and the group has me out of the house from 9-12:30 so there's really no way to adjust her nap.  I guess I will just have to see how it goes in the next week or two.  I might not be able to handle it.

  • I have had similar dilemmas and so far I have opted to stay home for their naps (I have twins, so it's much harder to go places anyways).  It was such hard work to get them on a good nap schedule that I don't want to ruin it. It's only for a season, since these little ones change so much.  But if you need this time, you have to take care of yourself! That's so important! Good luck!

I didn't realize your group is so long.  In that case, I'll skip it.  If it were an hour or so, then it'd be okay to shift your LO's nap.  But 3.5 hrs just won't work...
