Cloth Diapering

Pre-Wash question

I just got my first pack of CD in the mail...so excited!! So I see that after they are used, I need to do a pre-wash, hot cycle, then extra rinse. My washer doesn't have a prewash, so I am trying to figure out what cycle to put them on for the prewash. I have a "Quick Full" and "Quick Light" option, that I'm thinking may be best. Problem is my washer's manual doesn't tell me what the temp is on those cycles. If I"m not sure, should I just run a cold cycle before the hot cycle? Thanks!

Re: Pre-Wash question

  • Is there a customer service number for your washer that you could call, to find out what those quick cycles are? Or maybe some online help?

Most people do all right with a cold prewash. I think the reason for using cold, in most cases, is that it saves energy and for most people it is very effective in rinsing away a lot of stuff. It won't hurt your diapers to prewash them warm, if that's what those cycles do, but it will probably use more energy and drive up the overall cost of doing diaper laundry over time.

I bumped my prewash up to warm when we moved to an area with extremely hard water, and I started to notice an ammonia smell the first week that we were here. I found that the hot detergent wash was much more effective with a warm prewash.
  • I'd use the "quick light". On my machine, it's just "rinse and spin".

    Exactly this.
