Taking L/O off Formula

Ds is 11 months old and 28 pounds. My mom keeps telling me to take him off formula because he doesn't need it anymore. The ped (who we just saw on Friday for an ear check) said to wait til a year. I am following what my ped says but I am just curious. What are you doing or what have your peds said? TIA

Re: Taking L/O off Formula

  • The girls just turned 11 months over the weekend. I bought some WCM to add in occasionally. I have given it in a sippy once or twice a day. They aren't consuming much and at this point it is more for them to adjust to the taste.

  • Our ped said at least a year, but DD actually is having a hard time switching to solids so ped said we can keep her on formula for up to 15 months.  It's whatever your LO is ready for.  I would wait until a year, though.

  • My pedi also said wait to a year, and I can't think of a reason not to.  I may take my time at a year and do a mix of formula/WCM at that point, and slowly transition her onto it.  I'll take my cues from DD though.
  • Just started adding in WCM this weekend with formula.  He's been doing fine with yogurt and the pedi said if he was fine with yogurt to start the transition to be done at 1.  So far he really loved it.  I haven't seen him down a bottle that fast in a long time.

  • There's no rush! Take whatever time your baby needs with the transition. Besides the increased cost, there's no real downside to formula after the 1st birthday.

  • I am keeping her on formula until 1 but I do give her a little WCM in a sippy cup once or twice a day and I gotta tell ya, she LOVES it.  Gulps it out of that sippy as if Oreos were dunked in it too, ha.

  • I'm probably one of the only people here who have already transitioned, but DS2 has been drinking only wcm for about a week-ish now.  My dr said between 10 and 11 month, but he is a great eater and was doing great with yogurt and cheese.  He loves milk.  Drinks it SO fast.

Our pedi said a year for full time but I started giving him wcm every so often to see how he did with it and he did great. Pedi said keep him on formula for the extra nutrients because he doesn't eat much but isn't under weight. That being said my niece will be one 3 weeks after DS and her pedi told my sister to start her on wcm when she runs out if formula but niece eats really really well.

  • Pedi said a year so we've started the transition. She was ok with letting her have some prior to a year as long as it wasn't replacing bottles. Charlotte still isn't a fan but we've only been trying for a week now with every meal.
