Trying to Get Pregnant

Cat owners!!! Beware of hair ties and kitties!!!

This is the 2 surgery in a year that I have helped with from a cat eating hair ties. First cat months ago ate 13 hair ties.

The cat today came in labored breathing. Thought possibly asthma. X-ray showed foreign body obstruction.
Went to surgery 19 hair ties later and about 1500 dollars later kitty is doing fine.
Pic attached of just hair ties we took out of kitty. Forgot to take X-ray picture. Green pen in last picture to show size.

Re: Cat owners!!! Beware of hair ties and kitties!!!

  • Oh poor kitty! I have to hide mine in a drawer or they wake me at 3 am batting then around. The fabric type ones they do not eat, but for some reason they carry them to the toilet or water bowl and drop them in. Sucks to fish them out of the toilet.

I am VERY careful with rubber bands or rubber hair tires, milk bottle sealers, they definitely will eat those.

  • Oh my goodness!  What is it about hair ties?  My cat loves them, but I won't let him play with them.  That and Velcro are the only things that still get him to act like a kitten.

Yes never know when a cat might eat one. Crazy!!! Cat was so sick too.

Last cat was not. He was losing a little weight and was a picky eater. Must have been eating hair ties for a few years before owner really noticed anything wrong.

Yep, they love strings and stuff like hair ties.

My cat when he was younger use to love to go in the bathroom trash can and eat used dental floss.  One day he flew out of the litter box and was freaking out.  I caught him and saw dental floss sticking out of his ass.  lol  My husband held him down and I got a paper towel to pull it out. (gross)  We were actually lucky if that got wrapped up inside of him it could of killed him or been a real expensive surgery.

Glad that your cat is OK.

Oh no!!! Ribbon and string are so bad. When they swallow it sometimes it gets caught under their tongue and starts cutting away the underneath of the tongue. Have to do surgery to get it out can't just pull. The string can cut the intestines. So dangerous!!!

Omg I don't know how I did not see the part that you said you pulled it out of his butt. Actually you are lucky. That is the worst thing you could do. If it was long and in his intestines it could have perforated them and he could have been really sick. String floss. All that stuff cuts the intestine like a knife.

Yes my cat loves twisty ties from bread. Don't see them as much but I so have to watch her. That rubber bands and plastic bags. I never leave them around she will chew on anything plastic.

I have to watch my golden. He will find my hair tie and will carry it in his mouth and will walk around pacing around the coffee table. I will have him come to me open his mouth and there is my hair tie or ankle sock. Thank gosh he doesn't swallow them but I do not take a chance. But every once in awhile I will forget and he finds them. Thank gosh I have insurance on him. Lol

Poor kitty! How aweful. It may be fun to watch a cat pounce on balls of yarn and string and hair ties but after surgery or deathIits no longer fun :(

  • Oh my goodness! Hair ties are my cats' favorite thing to play with, and I never every thought they'd even consider eating them! They just bat them around and carry them from room to room. I will definitely be investing in real cat toys now. :(
