Baby Names

Would this be a deal breaker for you?

We had decided when we had a daughter we would name her Eden. "Eden" is now due in October. We still love the name.

....my best friend's new dog is Eden. She knows we loved the name, but she adopted the dog older, and the dog was already named, and already knew it's name, so changing it wasn't really practical. She did apologized profusely for "stealing" it.... but... Would this ruin the name forever for you?

(we don't live in the same state, so we're not hanging out with the dog all the time or anything, but it does of course come up from time to time.)

Re: Would this be a deal breaker for you?

  • Not at all.  Eden is a beautiful name! Use it!

Nope. Only family members' pets would ruin a name for me, since the child would have to interact with the pet somewhat frequently. Also, who the hell names a dog Eden? ETA: close family members. My cousin totally has a dog named Tilly, an occasional NN of DD2. Never bothered me.

Right??? Out of all the names in the entire world to name a dog I was like.....crap. What are the odds.
  • this sounds bad, but if it's an older dog, by the time your child is old enough to notice, it probably won't be a problem any more.
If you like it, I wouldn't care what the neighbors might say.
  • My name is Wendy and when I was a little kid, my aunt had a dog named Wendy. My aunt had the dog first, but my parents named me Wendy anyway. It was never a problem, and I saw the dog all the time.

  • Not at all, especially since you'll hardly ever be seeing the dog. Name your baby Eden.

  • When I was very young my uncle acquired a horse named Tammy, my name is Tammie.  I always thought it was really cool when I got to sit on her and have our picture taken.  My uncle was one of those men I was in awe of, a big guy with a soft heart.  He lives 650 miles away and I was always touched (even at 4) when he told me "I may not get to see YOU every day, so this way I can have my own Tammy nearby!"  She was an old horse when I met her so she's no longer around, and my mom didn't name me after the horse nor did my uncle name the horse after me.  It was just coincidence.  I don't think your friend having a dog with the name you had already chosen for your baby is an issue.  It may make a neat story when your child is older!  I know I like MY story! :)

  • So not an issue
  • Yeah, probably, bummer :(

  • My mom's very close friend has a dog the same name as my son.  The dog was named first, but it never gave me any doubt in naming my son.  When my son was born and I shared the name we joked about what good taste I have in names.

  • My sil named her dd chArley and that's our dog of 9 years' name!
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • Total non-issue. Go for it.
  • Not a deal breaker at all. I know plenty of people and animals with the same name. Plus, dog Eden won't be around forever and it's not like it's even your dog.

  • I love Eden and yes, I'd still use it.
