Cloth Diapering

Rash and prefolds/covers

We use prefolds and covers, and have been struggling with heat rash under the belly button to the legs. I switched to using only water on my flannel wipes. Changing frequently, usually as soon as we feel poop or every hour when he's awake. Let him air out 10-15 min during changes. Coconut oil before new diaper goes on. We went to disposables for a few days and the rash faded a bit, but really dont want to use them. Got some fleece liners and tried prefolds/covers again, and rash is red as ever. Now trying some pocket diapers. Any advice appreciated! we live in so cal, outside a lot, and I wear him several hours every day.

Re: Rash and prefolds/covers

  • My LO has very sensitive skin. We were doing GMD workhorse and had issues with rash.  I bought some fleece liners and did some Burt Bee's diaper cream and CJ's and it helped. I would do air time as much as you can. That seemed to help us. For us switching to some pockets really helped.  I also found that I have to use very little soap, 1/2 tsp. and do extra rinse as any extra soap irritates her bottom. Hope this help...good luck!

  • In addition to as much air time as possible, when you are home let her go cover-less so the air can get to her bum through the cotton prefolds.  You may need to change more often but it might help.  You also might want to look into wool covers.  I know most people only use them for night time but they are a valid choice for all day use.  The wool and cotton are both breathable and since you mentioned you wear her most of the time the wool might help.

  • We haven't had any rash issues but in the summer months we use prefolds and up cycled wool covers or shorties to keep it breathable for DS2 and in past years for ds1. We live in AZ...
