Posting kids' pics on FB

The author of this article has created quite a stir about pics of kids on FB and what is and isn't OK to post. I tend to agree with him in that I don't need to see potty training pics or photos of really gross stuff. However, I think it's a little crazy to say that posting pics of kids violates their privacy. What say you S12? Are my kids going to hate me later bc I post silly pics of my son dancing, my daughter practicing standing up and both kids in various stages of play?

Re: Posting kids' pics on FB

  • I can't imagine there will be too many kids in their generation who didn't have pictures of themselves up on somebody's FB page... It seems like social media is already a common enough thing that they won't think twice about it.

I do pay attention to the content of the pics I put on the internet, like no bathtime pics, no diaper only pics, and I limit who can see them as much as FB will let me (though I obviously put her picture on TB too...)  I don't really see having pics up on FB as any different from her Grandma showing printed pictures to anyone and everyone she meets.  The most important thing to me is to not connect pictures with GPS info, or have information about where we live/play/study to make things harder for predators.  If something I do now embarrasses her later, that's kind of part of growing up in a family!

  • I didn't read the article, but truthfully facebook has some great security features in place.  I don't post potty training, poop, or even many food pics on facebook just because that is NMS.  As a general rule my kids don't really run around in undies/ diapers so the likelihood of a picture like that being taken is pretty slim.  When I take bath time pics I make sure to take them from the angle that the tub blocks the lower half of them, so you can only see from chest up.

  • I never put clothes on G so a lot of her pictures are diapers only. I have put a bath time butt picture up. I'm pretty sure my security settings are as secure as possible.
  • I also did not read the article. FB is how I keep in contact with family.  I don't post a lot but I never post anything inappropriate.  No nude/diaper only shots, no bathtime pics. I haven't even taken any pics w/nudity other than bath pics and are just like @Holly_1007 with only the upper half of him.  Social media is a normal part of society like it or not.  If my kid will be embarrassed about a photo he is in some serious trouble because I got lots of black mail for when he gets older.  Haha

  • I have quite a few friends who never, ever post pictures of their kids on FB.  I think a few here and there is one thing, but I do think it's sort of overkill when there's a million of them. I would never post N naked, or in just her diaper, etc.  I personally don't find it appropriate, even with all of the security features in place.

I don't care what other people do but I don't care to see potty training pics. Leo's naked newborn butt is on the cover photo for our photographer.

  • Man, my parents should never have carried wallet photos or sent Christmas card pics of me back in the day.  I feel VIOLATED.

Most of my family lives fairly far away and doesn't get to see DD on a regular basis.  I'm going to post photos somewhere, and FB makes sense.  If it wasn't FB, it would be another site.  At the same time, I don't feel anyone needs to see her poop, her throwing up, or whatever and I guess I am cognizant of the fact that she could be embarrassed by some things, like her bum covered in poo or something, when she's older.

  • I admittedly didn't read the article. Our photographer jokingly said she was going to move out of the country when all these babies started getting drivers licenses and could come after her.  :P

I try and post responsibly to FB, month pictures, milestones, swim videos & particularly adorable shots.  It's more because I don't think people care that Beb ate spaghetti for dinner or blew out her diaper.  IG on the other hand that's where I put my baby spam. :)

  • I'm in the same boat as most of you, I post kids pics to FB, just not potty training or naked pics. Although I think baby butts are fine on the internet. My husband has a job that is very public, his fans know who our kids are and what they look like. The kids have been in a few YouTube videos for his company, it doesn't really bother me, most of the time. Occasionally our personal life can feel like public property and then I wonder if the kids will be upset that we didn't keep them more private.

  • My FB is covered with pictures of Bear. I have so much family that isn't around, plus my IG is linked to my FB. My mom, dad, sister, and ILs also post pictures of Bear that they take when I'm not with her and it's adorable. I haven't posted any naked pictures of her, just a couple in a towel when she was being silly, but she was all covered. Never will I post poo or spit up...that's disgusting.

I think the idea of "exploiting" your kid's privacy is ridiculous. If people don't like seeing Bear all over the place, they can just defriend me and have done with it.

Possible UO: I think having your FB profile picture as a picture of your child is stupid.
