3rd Trimester

Were you induced following a successful vaginal birth of prior baby???

My OB practice has the policy of offering a scheduled induction for convenience to
1) mothers that are between 39-40 weeks pregnant
2) have a ripe cervix (some dilation and/or softening),
3) AND previously had a successful vaginal delivery.

They said that when all of these factors are met, the risks of c-section are no higher.  I looked it up on the web and that seems to be what the literature says, which is surprising to me.  I'd love to hear from only those of you who MET ALL THREE CONDITIONS listed above, and what your experience was with the induction?  How did it compare to your first labor?

Thanks!

Re: Were you induced following a successful vaginal birth of prior baby???

  • I was induced with my 1st due to pre-e and had a successful vaginal delivery in 6 hours. I was induced with my 2nd out of convenience and it was a successful vaginal delivery as well. All they did was break my water for me and i delivered 3 hours later. It helped that I was already 5cm, but I was not in labor yet. My 2nd induction was better than my 1st because I didn't have to have extra meds. With my first I has Cervidil, Pitocin, and Magnesium Sulfate, and a foley and internal monitoring of the baby's heart rate.

  • I was induced at 36/4, delivered twins vaginally at 36/5. I don't meet all your conditions though.

  • Or you could just let baby come on its own when it is ready.

^^ this absolutely. I reread the OP and realized it was for convenience, not medical need. I was induced for medical reasons and thankfully both girls were healthy as a result.

  • I'd wait if I were you, pitocin is no picnic, it makes labor a lot more painful than it has to be.  I'm speaking from experience.

My labor was not painful with Pitocin, but if there is no medical reason, induction seems unwarranted.
