We go tomorrow for our ADOS follow up. Not sure what I'm hoping to hear, her deficits are obvious so it's not like a "not autism" response would immediately transform her into a typical kid. Even though I'm expecting a diagnosis I'm still really worried what my reaction will be. Any advice is welcome,TIA.

It's Autism. I had no doubt anyway. The developmental pedi gave us no direction. I'm irritated but not surprised.

Sorry the dev pedi wasn't more helpful. I hope you can find a local support group that can give you an idea where to start. Hugs.

  • Auntie- I was hoping for suggestions on therapies, or a referral or... anything. I didn't expect to just be handed a dx and sent on our way.

I feel like I don't have a good basis on how great her needs are. I trust our EI provider but at times I think she paints DD to be very HF and I don't know how true that is. Her cognative level is decent and she has excellent rote memory which makes her appear to be very bright for her age (colors, shapes, numbers, animals and noises... Today she corrected me that what I called an ape was an orangutang). But her speech is very scripted/echolalic and she has zero interest in socializing, joint interest, etc. she is very content to rabbit hole and just script out with figurines all day, so much so that she often refuses things thst arent a preferred activitu. So it's wonderful she has the skills she has but if she can't do anything with them and has no interest in the outside world.... KWIM?
  • We had a very similar experience. Our pedi met with DS for all of 15 minutes, handed us a slip of paper that said ASD and sent us on our way telling us to follow up with Childrens National. CNMC is not currently taking new patients. When I called the pedi back to let her know she said "there's always the internet and the school system." That's the extent of any referral or guidance we received from her. Not impressed. I'm sorry your experience was similar.
