Work Project ?

When you do a project for your boss/supervisor, do you expect to get any credit for it?

My boss delegates projects to me where I create templates, spreadsheets, do cost analyses, etc. Once I'm done, I email her with my completed work and she always takes my name off of everything and forwards them to her boss. She doesn't specifically say that she's done the work, but she never gives any credit to anyone else either. It bothers me, but I'm not sure if it's just common practice in business since she's just delegating work.

Re: Work Project ?

  • No. That's unacceptable to remove your name from work you did, IMO.

I work for a really shitty company, and even my boss got in trouble for that early this year.

  • Hmmmmm. Totally depends on the position, salary, company, and type of work. If it is high level work, it doesn't seem quite right if your boss is passing it off as his/her work. If it is simpler work that just needed to be completed, then let it go.

  • For example, I consider number crunching/routine data analysis to be whatever.

But a new creative piece of work, lengthy report that was difficult to put together, new ideas, game changing pieces of work... Different story.

I never have my name on pieces of info we distribute, though they are my brainwork. Then again, the execs know I did them. I am not passing off other work as my own.

So do you work for your boss? Or for the company, placed w your boss? The former, best to let it go.

I work for the company and just happen to be placed with my boss. And, I'm just a lowly staff employee. That's why I was thinking it's probably normal to not necessarily get the credit. It's just that I want to try for a promotion in the near future and I'm afraid the higher ups will have no idea what I've been involved with or what I'm capable of.
DH thinks I should embed my name in the spreadsheets so that if she deletes it, then it messes with all the formulas, but I don't think I'm that passive aggressive.

This.  100% unacceptable.  By removing your name and passing it along your boss is taking credit for your work.  There is no other logical reason for your name to be removed.  I would address it with her, let her know that your name is not to be removed from your work, and if she continues to do this I would address it with HR.

Can you put together a portfolio or "I love me" book of the projects you've worked on and what you contributed, complete with your name on the parts you did?  That way, when you go for the promotion, you could give the higher ups a reminder of how you've contributed?  I don't know that it's necessary to get recognition on a regular basis, but letting the higher ups know how you've contributed when going for a promotion seems completely legitimate to me.

Also, if it bothers you that your name gets taken off of your work, could you ask your boss about it?
  • I feel your pain but in a different way. My boss is the partner in our firm and has a bonus structure in place based on how much my clients pay each month. She ALWAYS has me take over work for her clients after they are paid in full so that none of the money they paid is credited toward my bonus threshold. Drives me insane. Then she proceeds to chide me at each review for not earning enough to bonus.

I wish I could complain to someone, but she's the boss and we have no HR.

I don't think what your boss is doing is right either. Can you cc or bcc her supervisor when you email your work to her so they are aware of your contributions?

That sucks. Why are people so crappy?!

Good idea about CCing her boss as well. I think I'll start doing that & her boss is really nice, so he shouldnt mind.
