Help toddler car sick every time!

Hi! I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for helping my DD not get sick in the car. She is 15 months and still RF. My DH wants to flip her FF thinking it will stop the puking, but I am trying to keep her RF as long as possible. She is literally getting sick on every car ride. Today she got sick twice, on the way to the store and on the way home. Her car seat reeks so any tips on getting the smell out are appreciated too (it is a Safety1st air 65). Thanks!

  • My DD went through a period of puking in the car. I had to wait at least 20 min. since she had anything to eat or drink before driving. Luckily, she outgrew it in about 6 months.

Anyway, wipe down the car seat in vinegar and soak the cover in vinegar before washing will get the smell out. It stinks at first, but the vinegar smell goes away when it dries. Works for pee too.

  • I used to get motion sick in the car as a child and my mom got peppermint essential oil and would put it behind my ears. I don't really remember if it helped but she swears it did!

  • I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this!

DS gets car sick a lot.  Not every time, but on almost every long car trip.  He's 4.5 and FF, so RF v. FF hasn't made a difference for us.  The only thing that we've found that helps a little is no big meals within an hour of getting in the car.  He seems to be fine with only a snack, it's the full meals that do him in.   We haven't tried the peppermint the other poster suggested, that's definitely worth a try!  Hopefully in your case, it will be something that your child will grow out of.

Cleaning the car seat is such a pain, things seem to get stuck in every nook and cranny.  Fortunately, DS is old enough now where he is able to throw up in the bucket we always keep next to him, so his car seat stays clean. When he was younger, we would use vinegar too. It does make the car seat a little stinky for a bit, but I'd rather smell vinegar than puke.

    Good luck!

  • My friend's dd had this problem. It came from looking out the window and out the back. She switched her to ff and put those roller blinds on the side windows. She also used a portable Dvd player to focus her eyes off the windows. She did much better after that and outgrew it by age 3.

  • All 3 of our kids get motion sick driving through the mountains or boating.  (So does DH.)
I buy chewable Dramamine and they can only watch a movie or color in the car (no reading, video games, etc).

I would look into the shades to see if that helps.  We had to clean out the car seat before too and it sucks.
