Infertility

IUI today..need opinions and advice!

My husband and I have been TTC for 18 months now. I am 25 and he is 28. When we went to a specialist and had a semen analysis done the results came back as 2% morphology we were devistated and were told that we could try a few rounds of iui but would probably have to go through ivf. Well this month we decided to try our first round of iui with clomid and an ovidrel trigger shot. I had a positive opk yesterday and an ultrasound showing 7 follicles 5 of which are of size to release. At first they weren't going to let me do iui due to having so many follicles but the dr said to go ahead and do it due to my husbands morphology. Well this morning we went in for our iui and his morphology came back at 29% on the WHO scale (the scale said a normal morphology is >or= 30)with a total count after washing of 25 million. We were so excited to see that! I am very hopeful that this will work this month. What are your thoughts? Any more info you need? Please give me some piece of mind and a little glimmer of hope even though I don't want to get my hopes up to be disappointed. Dr also warned of multiples with so many follicles so idk what her opinion is of the success rate for us this month

  • Motility was 64% I believe if that helps at all

  • Hi there! Welcome to the board! That's great that his morph is improving. Our only SA issue is low morphology at 3% In case it makes you feel more positive, my RE says that morphology at 3% can be found in the fertile population! Therefore I think you have every reason to be hopeful with his improving numbers and your good follie count. Keep us posted.

  • Holy crap! He went from 2% to 29%.. I have never heard of such a dramatic change?!!?!?  That is incredably he if that is the case + 5 follicles.  I want to be you right now!!

My husband has a 2% morphology, which seems to be our only infertility issue.  If it helps we have gotten pregnant 2x naturally (1 full tern, 1 loss) , It usually takes up a few years on our own but it happens :)  so there is always a hope for low Morph!

Fingers (and legs) crossed for babies soon, I had my first IUI with Clomid/Ovidrel on Thursday.
    Married 10/29/2005
TTC 2 years and BFP! High risk pregnancy - high BP, Gestational diabetes on insulin, 4 blood clotting problems on lovenox 2x a day TTC again 3 years - BFP 3/2013. Lost baby 4/2014
Referred to RE by high risk DR - diagnosis unexplained female infertility and 2% morphology male infertility.
    Clomid/ovadril Without IUI - BFN 5/2013
    Clomid/ovadril Without  IUI - BFN 6/2013
    Clomid/ovadril With IUI -  7/31/2013 and 8/1/2012 BFP WITH TWINS!  Vanishing twin @ 7wks

He did not go from 2 to 29.  The 2 would have been using Strict Kruger and 29 is using WHO.  I am actually really surprised that your RE's office would use WHO as it is considered outdated.

  • They used the Krueger for the initial analysis and then the WHO the day of the insemination for whatever reason. Hey didn't give me a reason but did say his numbers did improve greatly even showing on two separate scales. Either way I'm still glad his morphology improved even comparing the two different scales.
  • I'm happy that DH had improved numbers, but I would seriously reconsider your RE's office.  They should have never allowed you to go forward with an IUI with 5 mature follicles.  Most doctors would have canceled and advised you to abstain from intercourse.  Not to scare you, but I believe this is how Jon & Kate ended up with their sextuplets.

FWIW, my DH had 1% morphology and we got pregnant with twins with 3 mature follicles. When I asked about his morphology the day of the IUI, the doctor told me that they cannot test morphology (only count) at the IUI because that testing actually destroys the sperm.

I wish you all the luck in the world this cycle, but I would just say that I would do more investigation into my RE's methods if I was you.

Congrats on the higher morph! That’s great! My RE said he wouldnt move forward with 6 or more follicles. Id rather chance multiples than risk a chance of missing a cycle/missing the opportunity to be a mom. My egg count is too low for those odds. I don’t think moving forward with 5 is a bad move at all. Best of luck! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

This. I think they are great questions to ask your RE. My clinic says they will cancel an IUI with over 3 mature follicles but I didn't have that many so I wasn't in that situation. I also never found out the morphology that day of either.
Best of luck to you and congrats on having such am improvement in your DH's numbers- I am sure it felt great to hear that news!
I hope this is your month!!!

  • Wow, I'm surprised your RE went forward with the IUI with that many mature follicles. Hello, John and Kate! I'm not trying to be rude but it can be potentially quite dangerous. Best of luck to you.

Its not just the matter of missing another month to be a mom. The risks of a multiples pregnancy, let alone HOM is very dangerous both to mom and babies. You're willing to risk your life and/or theirs?

  • Ugh now I'm nervous about this. The nurse said this particular dr does not promote multiples and wouldn't put me in that position so I'm not sure now. And idk how they did a morphology the day of the iui but somehow they were able to give me a number. Thanks for your input. Trying to calm myself down now...
  • Brandi, sorry that we made you nervous but I am glad you talked it over with your nurse. Hopefully everything is okay this month and you get blessed with a healthy BFP but I think in future months if your mature follicle count is that high, you should have a long talk with your RE about the risks in moving forward with the IUI. Try not to worry about it too much- there is enough to worry us in the 2ww!
